Birthday Present

I am seeking help on buying an Apple Laptop for my brother as a birthday gift. Normally i'm quite good with computers, however my knowledge of Mac's is slim to none being a Windows user myself. This is usually the point where my brother spits at my feet and calls me dirty hehe.

Bascically, he is a Command & Conquer fanatic, and now that its been released onto Macintosh, he wants a Laptop that will run it, which is where i hope someone can help me. Could someone please compose a list of Mac Laptops that can run Command & Conquer : Generals and its expansion pack Zero Hour.

I believe these to be the Macintosh Specifications for the game:

System requirements:

* Requires full version of Command & Conquer Generals
* Mac OS X v10.2.8 or later
* G4/1GHz or faster, 256MB RAM
* 1.6GB free hard drive space
* ATI Radeon 7500 or Nvidia GeForce2 MX or better with at least 32MB VRAM and a DVD drive
* Internet play is Mac to Mac only
* GameRanger is supported

any current mac will run that game. i'd recommend a 12" ibook.

Depends on what else he would be doing on the laptop. If he will just be using it for the game, internet and email, definitely go with the iBook. Typically, that's all you'll need. The only reason to get a PowerBook, as opposed to the iBook, is for work in Photoshop, etc. This is because the PowerBook is the pro-level machine while the iBook is the consumer level machine.

A word of warning: The C&C programmers were slack, and the Mac version won't talk to the Windows version.

I would go with an iBook, they would run that game fine. Keep in mind that the 12" and 14" models have the same screen real estate. The 14" is just a larger image with no more screen space. I went with the PowerBook because it is my main computer so I wanted the extra screen space of the 15" display, plus the addition of the audio input which the iBook doesn't have.

Wow, you're buying him a 'book for his birthday. What a brother! I'd go with the 12" PB if you can afford it. But quite frankly the 12" iBook is a very nice machine even though not quite as quick as the PB.

If i were you go for the 12" iBook. It has a better graphics card in many ways. It's been proven, too. So don't you guys bite my head off

Well i dunno but Macs aren't really for games...i would recomend getting a Windows system as ur brother might get tired of Command & Conquer Generals at the end of the day and wanna move on to some other games and we all knoe how games are limited on the mac side...Windows, they're pretty cheap these days and games run flawlessly on them...

I would prefer he went with a windows machine, but he has a Mac already which he loves. I think its the stability of the OS and the software, he had a windows beack when Windows 98 was state of the art, had many blue screens of death and a nasty Kernel32 problem for a long time, i think thats why he is reluctant to return to a windows machine. But he is on his 3rd battery for his iBook so i might be able to turn him back to the dark side as he calls it.

Only problem with his current laptop is that its just getting a bit old and outdated. I'm not too worried about him getting bored of the game as its the only one he plays, in the last decade he's barely played a game outside of the Command & Conquer series.
