Before I say anything, I'd like to point out that I am brand new to bittorent, but decided a few weeks ago I'd give it a try.

I started with the default bittorent app. It worked well for a while (usually over 100 kb/s), but I started to get really slow download rates (a few kb/s). I switched to Vuze, and the download speeds shot up to over 100 kb/s. However, I do have a super fast Japanese fiber optics connection which usually tests at over 60000 kb/s with uploads about 10000 kb/s. But I was still happy with over 100 kb/s.

Then it started to slow down:(. It's been about 20 kb/s for the better part of a day and I've been trying to figure how to make it faster. I realize that some of it is leechers and seeders, but really, I could simply download this of the internet for faster. At one point it shot up above 200 kb/s and then dropped again, for no apparent reason.

I just tried my luck with port forwarding. Being in Japanese it was somewhat difficult to navigate, but I think I got it. Well not really. I just realized I might have put the wrong IP address on. Would I have to plug in 192.168.x.x? or would I have something more permanent?

Anyways, I'd really like to take advantage of my fast connection, so I guess my final question is this: how do I max out my bittorrent downloads?

Thanks for your help.:D

1st i assume that ure only using bit torrent for legal things such as non copyrighted material;);) or demos like X-Plane. if not then you must read the forum rules again.

However, I use Transmission ( i think thats the correct spelling), anyhoo, you can find and download it from versiontracker.com direct Linkety, its a great app, you can set DL/UL speeds for each torrent or the app as a whole, run multiple torrent files in the same window and prioritise individual files within torrents, give it a go.

or your ISP may have capped your speed due to high usage, if the speed stays down and then goes back up at the start of your next billing month, thats your problem and you need to get yourself a nice new ISP with no usage caps or speed limiting for certain content.

1) Having a fast internet connection doesn't mean you'll get fast bittorrent downloads. You're reliant on the speed of other peoples upload speeds in the swarm.

2) You need to get your port forwarding working correctly. Check the preferences of your bittorrent application to see what port it is using, then go on to your router and forward that port to the LAN IP of your computer running bittorrent (for help port forwarding see http://www.portforward.com).

Other possibilities for slow speeds are your ISP dicking around with your connection/traffic, traffic shaping, capping etc.

make sure your router doesnt assign your Maca a different IP address each time you connect by either using DHCP with a manual address in network preferences or have your router assign you a static IP for your MAC address (called network ID in OS X). because the port that you open only works for a single IP address.

Thanks for the quick responses. I'm quite sure it isn't an internet cap, a I've never had the problem before and I can still download other things at full speed. And I did make sure I used my MAC address, so I wouldn't have to worry about it changing on me.

However, I'm having a lot of problems with the whole port forwarding thing. Being in Japan, all of the router menus etc are in Japanese, and I'm not fluent.

Nevertheless, I did think I figured it out. I put my MAC addresses on for both my airport and my ethernet. However, after this, my internet was really slow, the bittorrent barely (if at all) faster, and my connection even died out several times, forcing me to reboot the router. I used the port number 52191, and selected this on Vuze as well. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Thanks for the input, feel free to add more!

Hi,

I have more or less a same problem. Since last week I'm a proud owner of a mini mac. Before this I made use of an Acer laptop using a wireless router.
I forwarded a port on my router to use Utorrent. This works really great.
In short
My Acer : 192.168.2.2
My Mini Mac: 192.168.2.7

Now I would like to use Vuze and forwarded (my mac with 192.168.2.7) several different ports (something like 52191) on my router. But when I try to test this port, Vuze says that this port is not open and it will give a time-out.

Please help me! Do I need to use another bittorrent program?

Perhaps your share ratios are low!! In order for bitirrent model to work you must upload at least what you download ideally 1.5 to 2.0 times upload as per download. I believe some may limit your download until you are a good uploader.

I always do 2 to 1 :)

I don't think that's the reason. Utorrent is working on my laptop! This port if forwarded correctly. So I don't think that Vuze is looking at my share ratio, which is quite good.

thanks anyway, some other idea's perhaps?

he means the ratio of seeders to leechers for the torrent not the share ratio of your bittorrent tracker account or in your Vuze client.

you will always get a better speed when there are more seeders (people finished downloading and now uploading) than leechers (downloading from the seeders but still uploading the parts they have downloaded). if there are no seeders your download wont start at all. thats why its always good to seed to a ratio of 1.0 for a private community or at least seed a little bit if there arent any seeders for a public community. :)

Thanks for the reply. I managed to get the torrents working.
It seems to be that working with a torrent app on your mac with a different wireless router (not apple) often gives problems. It doesn't matter if you've forwarded a port on your router for bittorrent. It will work for 10 min. and then the download and uploads will drop to 0 kb/s. Now I've linked my mini mac via an ethernet cable with my router, all of a sudden the port is open and my downloads are working!

ive had a Negear router and now a Netcomm router and ive never had problems with openning ports:confused: well done on fixing the issue… it may have been a wireless problem?

Glad you've got it up and running, although this statement isn't really that accurate. There is some older Netgear stuff out there that struggles (a few of the the modem/router combos) but on the whole torrent problems are a usually a combination of client and firewall settings, seeds and ratio aside.

Anyway, gratz and enjoy.

To go off on a tangent, is there a way to mask my IP from trackers, or is there a way to download without trackers...

go look up a program called tor which masks your ip, but it is a proxy for your bittorrent program

Enable universal plug and play in zune and your router. I am not sure what it is called in Japanese but I think it could just be listed in English as UPnP. This auto maps your ports and is the simplest way to make sure you get good speeds.
