Lately, I've been experiencing bizarre amounts of memory and swap usage.

I've seen similar situations a couple of times since upgrading to Yosemite.
Any thoughts on causes or solutions?

I'm on OS X 10.10.1. Details about my machine are available in my signature below.

Thanks!

clearly you're having some sort of issue with the backupd (time machine) process.

- Yes, I figured as much. Any idea about what's causing the problem?
I just disabled Time Machine in System Preferences, which of course caused the process to disappear and memory usage to go back to normal. But I suspect the problem will return at some point if I enable TM again...

Interestingly, the memory usage of "kernel_task" dropped to from 5 GB to about 1 GB, too.

My suggestion would be to restart the backup (remove the old TM destination and add a new one)
