I've seen reports that it can suffer same as the iPhone 5S especially if you are in contact with / vicinity of sand or grit on a regular basis.

There's no such thing as "any anodized aluminum".
Their are quality grades that make a big difference in durability.
I have Silver since I bought it upon release. My brother waited and got Black. So far it's proving significantly more scratch resistant than his Black iPhone 5.
I upgraded to an black HTC One at the end of May. I do have my phone in a Otterbox Commuter case and the exposed areas of the phone not completely covered by the case around the power button, camera and noise cancelling mic show no signs of wear. The headphone and micro USB jacks are also blemish free from daily use. So the durability of this phone seems to be very good from my experience.
