Black MacBook Fan Noise.

I've had a MacBook Pro before and recently sold it to downgrade to the 13in MB because I wanted something smaller.

I got it last week and it seems to have a fan noise in the middle/kind of right side of the keyboard.

I'm sure its normal, I just want to make sure that this should be doing that, I don't want to keep it for a year and find out that its doing something faulty. (my MBP never had too much fan noise)

How hot is it running? From my experience, it's probably nothing to worry about, but the MacBooks don't make all that much noise.

its not hot at all, but it never goes off its on all the time.

it not a bad noise, it doesn't sound bad, but I remember never hearing really anything with my MBP

it doesnt sound bad, it is loud at times, especially if I am surfing on a site that is using alot of Flash

I have a new black MB C2D and haven't really had much of a fan noise issue.

If you have an Apple Store nearby, I'd make an appt online and take it in just to be sure, especially if you just bought it.

so when you are in a room silent and by yourself, you don't hear the fan?

the thing about it is it could be a perfectly normal sound but I just don't know.

the fan goes off when temps rise above a certain threshold; yes, it is audible several feet away in a quiet room, and no, it's not defective. i read somewhere the new firmware makes the fans spin more often at lower temps to prevent heat problems.

You can hear the fan in the MB, yes. It's just a quiet whoosh/hum. But I can only hear it when the room is quiet. Any background noise drowns in out completely. If you do something that pushes the CPUs and graphics card--fire up Chess for an example--the fans WILL crank up and be significantly louder. Ditto for the MBP.

Now if you're getting a rattling sound or squeal or vibration, then that's something to have looked at.

I was recently at the Genius Bar, and they told me not to worry about the fan in my new MacBook unless it runs all the time, since they're not supposed to do that. The fan in my MacBook is fairly quiet, and turns on and off when needed. So if, as you say above, your fan never goes off, I'd definitely call Apple Care about that.

I'm not talking about the fan that comes on when the computer gets too hot, I'm talking about a regular sound that stays contiguous throughout my use. Its never off. When it gets hot or I'm ripping a dvd, the fan kicks on.

I have 2 MacBooks, and they're both totally quiet when the fan is not running. Since your MacBook is new, I'd call Applecare about this constant sound you're experiencing.

My MB C2D fan has a tendency to make a whine at certain rpms. Around 2640 it kicks in, sort of a high pitched "singing" that goes away as the fan either spins up or slows down. Sounds like it is oscillating or something. The next threshold is around 3100 RPM and the last that Ive noticed - and worst in terms of loudness - is at 3678-3680. It hums here.

The C2D MB is pretty silent as it is, so the slight whine stands out a lot, even if it is very silent. In a mentally annoying way that is, the noise is not totally driving you up the wall like the CPU/screen whine reported from the MBPs. I've heard that and THAT is horrible.

Im still undecided about whether Im obsessing or just should leave it. I mean my old laptop makes a din compared to this and Ive worked on that for years. I have right of return so I got to make my mind up. Is it normal for the MB fans to "hum" at certain speeds? Is it a dodgy fan or something that can be fixed? I probably won't bother swapping it since I love the computer a lot, but I have to this friday to make up my mind.

Damn, why do you fall in love with Mac OS X and the MB so fast? ^_^

it sounds like the monitor hum used to sound on the MBP 15 when they first came out.

but its not the monitor, atleast I think.
