Black MacBook Moos like a champ.

I picked up a Black MacBook on Monday night (5/22) at the CompUSA in Alexandria, Va. Very impressed with it. I definitely feel that this edish looks and feels much better in person. I'm operating with 1GB of RAM which I bought from the Pentagon City Apple Store and installed myself. Everything works out so far. The laptop doesn't get too hot unless it's hooked to the AC while charging. For the most part, I'll use a desk if I'm doing serious work.

Anyway, so while laying out a newsletter in Adobe InDesign 2.0 last night, I started hearing the MacBook mooing like a cow. I read some posts about this problem in the MacBook Pros. Has anyone with a Black or White MacBook experienced this yet or brought this problem to the Genius Bar? Would this laptop be considered defective or operating within the norm?

The mooing goes away, and then it comes back. Granted I had Idol and parts of the NHL and NBA playoffs in the background. You'd think 'oh the mooing is nothing, just turn up the volume so you can't hear it'. But I'm just wondering if this will be a problem in the long run or, is this normal?

I haven't registerd for AppleCare. But I plan to do that tonight. But overall, I'm a big fan of this laptop. It's pretty classy, a throwback if you will. I watched a little bit of North by Northwest on this and the quality looked great. Very sharp.

Thanks for the feedback and link to that forum boss. Really appreciate it. Sounds like it could be a defective fan, or fans that normally come on, or my favorite, a small hungry animal living inside. Whatever it is, Apple must fix this.

The "mooing" is not a problem, it's just the fans running...what happens is they change RPM based on need to cool the processors, so what you're hearing is the RPM fluctuate.

Got my white macbook today. It's beenb up and running for the last few hours. So far no audible noise what so ever. Temp seems to be fine, though it is lifted up on an iCurve so maybe that helps.

No problems with it at all in fact, no dead pixels, no mooing, no squeaky latch. Great machine.

Blocked vent?

Take a look at this:

You might want to check the vent near the screen hinge on your MB. It looks like some of the MBs are shipping with a plastic laminate shipping-shield over the vent which blocks airflow.

I tend to disagree. The fans on my G5 at work don't *constantly* spin up and spin down in rapid succession. They're just on and spinning at a relatively low rpm (most of the time). I see no reason why it would have to be any different in a notebook. Why aren't the macbook fans just on at a low rpm and not on then off then on then off then on then off then....etc. This wasn't a problem with the fan in my ibook g4. And the mystery firmware update seems to have fixed this for lots of peope who had mooing mbp's.

It just doesn't "seem right". Like taking my car out for a drive and speeding up to 35 mph then down to 5 mph then back up to 35 mph and so on. It'd be a much happier experience for everyone involved (except for the person behind me) if I just cruised around at 20 mph.

Not true at all. When it hits about 67 degrees C or so it goes on and off repeatedly and at a regular interval. Above the approximately 67 degree threshold it behaves normally, revving up slowly according to temp.

As far as I know, I haven't heard of MBs having this problem. My MBP hasn't had this problem, either. I know a few people who have MBs and MBPs and from what I've seen, a lot of the apparent problems with MBPs are not present with MBs.
