So I've decided to buy a macbook.

Now I can't decide between a black one or a white one. If they had an aluminium case like the MBP I would get that, but they don't.

What do you prefer and why?

I personally would go for a black macbook. When i saw them at the apple store I found that the bezel of the white one looked a little too wide, but due to the difference in colour the black macbook looked much better, less 'clumpy'.

That's just my opinion, but the black is stunning. Certainly had the largest gathering on both of my visits to the store too. :)

I was originally going to go black, but have since decided on white. My experience with black iPods & DS Lites have taught me that I'm too picky about maintaining flawless looks and I'm sure the BlackBook would give me OCD - both cleaning it and my hands constantly.

BTW its worth doing a search - this topic has been covered many times, most with more in depth reason why folks have chosen one over the other. Here's one to get you started.

White (which is why I got one).

*For me, the black price was an unjustifiable premium (was on a tight budget)

*It's certainly popular, but I wonder if this is because black is currently novel as there haven't been any black apple laptops for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if white remained the classic choice.

*I think it looks like a generic pc.

That is actually an argument for the black MB. I started with the white, and it immediately started to stain despite my washing my hands religiously before using it. The black one has been no problem. Bear in mind that the black MB is not glossy like the iPod or the white MB, and is not prone to scratches or staining.

Latest white MacBooks don't stain. In fact, out of the three people who I know with WhiteBooks, not one has evidence of staining. Scratches yes, but the BlackBook does also scratch. Not to the same extent as the whitebook, but it does scratch. Plus scratch removers exist for the Whitebooks but not the black... as yet.

I think you will find that with any care at all, the black will not scratch.* The white, being glossy, will inevitably develop a fine lattice of micro-scrathces like the iPod and previous iBooks.

Sorry to be a pest, but the white MBs have had a number of cosmetic issues (not including structural issues here) while the black MBs have had none other than oil standing out on the mousepad for the first few days of use and one black MB that bizarrely and uniquely seemed to exhibit flaking on the finish.

The white is lovely, and I would never discourage anyone from buying one.* That said, I think it is important to inform buyers that if one is overly concerned about cosmetic issues, the white MB is certainly more problematic, particularly with its glossy finish.

Contrary to what you have said, with any care at all, the black MB does not scratch.  It would take a serious scrape to scratch this finish.

Well I've seen blackbooks with oils on the trackpad, the keys and the areas around the keys. Now the people using them may not have washed their hands ever, but it is still and issue, and an issue the three folks I know who purchased whitebooks decided to live without.
Like I mentioned the fiine scratched that affect the whitebooks can be easily removed. However I do believe that the blackbook is hard wearing and if looked after won't scratch. But should it get scratched there isn't an easy way to repair it as yet.
Personally I'd still go with a blackbook if the keys were more resistant to hand residues. Both have got their plus and minus points, it purely down to the preferance of the end user which to side with. (aka we'll agree to disagree ;) )

I have a question actually regarding heat. Do you think the white MacBook would be cooler over the black one? I know black absorbs heat while white does the opposite but would this apply here too?

My vote for the white, which is what I have of course. When I saw the black MB in store I just thought yuk. It had greasy finger and hand prints all over it and I knew I was going to spend eternity forever wiping it over. Even the outside of the lid was imprinted with finger prints.

As for scratching the white MB, I don't really see an issue. It's not like you'll ever notice any scratches unless you're really anal and look over it at a certain angle with your eye poised closely to the surface.

In my mind, black equals a cheap Dell. Used to be all laptops were black, white laptops where what makes the Mac laptops unique. At the same price, or even more, I'd still choose white.

Nope. Only if you're using it in the direct sun (white reflects more solar). Heat radiation would be the same.

Have you seen the dell laptops? They're all silver and while or silver and some sort of cheap colored plastic. In the last few years i haven't seen a dell laptop that's all black.

In addition, i've picked up a few friends' dell laptops and they creak and groan under their own weight - not so with my lurvly blackbook.

IMO, the contrast between the lit-up apple and the macbook is gorgeous, and just the look of it all on my desk - it's simply beautiful. refined. unique. I can't compare it to any other laptop on the market.

Be warned, I'm seeing a bit of oil on the outside of the cases, but if you use some sort of solvent, it comes right off.

Depends on where you plan on buying it from also. I brought mine from MacConnection because of the rebate and wanted the bigger HD, so it was an easy choice.

If I didnt need a superdrive i would buy the White Combo since its the best deal if you can get that free ipod.

either way you go you will be happy with your choice.
