It may have been beaten to death but this is what I get in this day and age, dynamic wallpaper. Catalina on a maxed out 2012MBA

Dynamic wallpaper?
Any change when you switch to a different wallpaper?

Your screenshot is on a login window.
Does the rectangle disappear if you log in to the desktop?

Thank you! Yes, Dynamic Wallpaper, the black rectangle appears at a certain hour in the evening and I will check tonight if it stays after login, I think it does stay. It has no effect on anything really, just looks quite bizarre. If I turn the dynamic thing off everything looks as it should.

This is not exactly a "fix", but is another check.
Open System Preferences, then the Displays pane.
Click the Night Shift tab, then choose OFF from the Schedule drop-down list.
That will turn the Night Shift feature off - which means that your display color-temperature does not automatically change during night time hours.
Assuming that night shift is causing your issue, you should not see the black rectangle. (and you might be OK without the automatic daily color shift  )

Thanks for your help, DeltaMac! The night shift was off, but I ran an update which showed up just as on queue and while literally fiddling with three pics they have for dynamic wallpaper the black rectangle vanished. So, no more black boxes on my screen.
