Black screen after installing Windows 7

Im trying to install Windows 7 using bootcamp on my iMac. Everything works just fine until after the main part of install is done, it then restarts and goes to a black screen and does not move from that black screen.

I am aware of the issues that I have described above and how to fix them. So I followed the instructions to fix on apples support but unfortunately, I only had the updated driver fix on my USB drive so it still doesnt work.

What I think I need to do is get back into my mac boot. Then I can either just delete the partition, or I can get all the correct bootcamp drivers. The normal way of holding down the Alt key on startup doesnt seem to be working, is there any other way I can get back onto my Mac boot?

You need to hook up an external display to see what's going on in Windows and install the bootcamp drivers. Holding option should still work at boot.. try pressing it a few times right after the chime.

Well I got it to boot back into mac, I then started again. I installed Vista this time in an attempt to use the Win 7 upgrade utility provided by apple. Unforunatley I cant do that as I am going from 32bit vista to 64bit win7. I can access my windows.old through repair my system option in win7 install. I select the drivers but it refuses to let me install them as it requires a "Setup File".

There isnt a way to connect to external display without a mini-dvi is there? In which case I dont have one of those so I guess I'll have to go and get one.

Actual Solution

Had this problem yesterday. Fixed it easily. No need for an SD card

1) start afresh with a new windows 7 installation
2) Once it gets to the bit where it goes black restart and start from windows 7 installation cd
3) Don't reinstall - go to the bit where it says "repair your computer" or something like that
4) Keep clicking suff until you get to the bit where it lets you go to command prompt
5) From here you have to delete a file called ATIKMDAG.SYS. It should be C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ATIKMDAG.SYS

type cd [directory name] - to change directories
type dir - to display everything in the current directory
del [filename] - to delete a file.

keep cding to find it then delete it!

-Restart your computer and it should boot into windows 7 fine. Then grab your osx cd and install the drivers

I used the Apple KB as well, but I used a usb stick instead of an SD card. I basically had to reinstall Win7 again and just left the usb stick inserted and it automatically accessed the usb and loaded the correct drivers during the OS install and walahhh... no longer a black screen issue and I was able to proceed with the final steps of the installation.
