When I try to install Windows, I get these lengthy black screens (well, the screen actually goes into power saving mode) where I have no idea of what's going on. The CD doesn't spin, and I have no idea of telling whether the computer is actually doing any work or not, so I usually end up shutting the computer down after 20 minutes or so, thinking the darn computer has hung up.

How do I fix this? This is also what happens when I have a working installation of Windows. The monitor goes into power saving mode during the entire startup sequence of Windows, and powers up only when Windows is fully loaded.

Closing my eyes hoping the computer does indeed boot up without a problem every single time I boot into Windows is not enjoyable, and wasting time trying to install Windows without actually seeing what you do is not very enjoyable either.

I have all the latest software updates and a working install CD of Windows.

apparently the screen went black because it switched to the other monitor (my tv).
