Black screen of death and error message!

My brand spanking new Macbook Pro has died and I don't know how to fix it! I was trying to get my music off my ipod onto my
MBP. I got directions off the internet to go to
Applications, Terminal and then copy and paste a line of code that
shows hidden folders.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE killall Finder
That worked but then I saw all these other folders in my MBP Hard drive. So i
stupidly tried to Trash them and start again. Then it started asking
me permission and when i put in my password it was invalid. Then it
started freezing up and no applications would open. So i just
restarted the computer and got the black screen and a message
something like /etc/passwd:No such file or directory
and then some numbers and a message like I0Bluetooth HCI something something. I tried to reinstall the applications but when I did
it still wasn't working properly and it wouldn't even shut down so i
manually shut down. when i restarted it goes from a blinking apple to
an X sign (like a circle with a line through it) and alternates back
and forth between those two pictures.
Sorry that was long- but any ideas?

Typically, hidden folders are hidden for a reason. Unless you are an experienced mac user, you should probably try to stay away from deleting files that look cryptic to you since they are probably important. I think your best bet may be to just reinstall.

Yes, you've deleted some of the system files. You'll need to reinstall the OS from the system DVD that came with your Mac. You won't be able to do anything until you do that.

To get music of an iPod, just use Senuti or some other more user friendly application rather than playing around with terminal commands.

Actually I did try to reinstall and the black screen went away. But then I still had all the old programs I had installed that weren't part of the installation disk. (Like Final Cut, etc.) The hidden files thing was still on too I think because everytime I put something in the trash it would show up as a file on my Hard drive. Then none of the applications would work again and it wouldn't shut down or restart. So I manually shut down and when I restarted I got a blinking apple alternating with a circle with a line through it (like a no smoking sign). I can't even turn it on properly now.

also I'd like to say this is the first time I posted anything and I'm really surprised at how fast you guys are responding. Thanks for trying to help.
