Hey everyone!

This morning I opened my Mac to find that the backlight was completely off. That’s happened to me once before so I tried just restarting it, as that helped last time. Upon restarting, the display wouldn’t turn on at all. I’ve tried resetting the SMC, PRAM/NVRAM, booting in Safe Mode, and going into Recovery Mode. Safe Mode didn’t start, I can’t tell if the first two actually worked, and Recovery Mode was able to revive the screen for one boot, but it’s been black since. I have it hooked up to an external display, and I’m able to log in by just typing my password after startup, but I haven’t been able to get Safe Mode or anything else to work.

I think it might be the display cable going bad, but the fact that Recovery Mode revived it for a single boot makes me hopeful that it could just be a software thing. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas? macOS Monterey 12.3 dev beta 1.

Thanks!

I had the same thing happen on Monday.Tried some of what you mentioned and can hear the chime bu no display. So I purchased usb-C to digital AV. I get the background to come up on the tv but nothing else. I have the hdmi cable in the tv hdmi outlet and the other end in the hdmi adapter which is in the MacBook Pro. The tv is set to hdmi2 and the cable is in the hdmi position. Any ideas to get it to display on the TV so I can save some of my files to the cloud so I can access them.

Click on the background on the TV, then hit Cmd-Space to open Spotlight Search and get to System Preferences. Go into Display settings and mirror the displays.

I managed to get mine to kind of work. If I open it to about a 45° angle the display comes on, but anything past that and it’s toast.

If you can get it to an Apple Store, they might offer a better deal if they think it's related to flexgate, which reportedly did affect 2017 15" MBPs.
