If your talking about dead pixels on the LCD, I think I remember reading that there has to be X number of them before they will replace it. I can't remember the exact amount right now. But remember reading about it a few months back when my 4.5 year old iMac got 2 of them.

Not dead pixels the burn marks or the black marks behind the screen that their is some giant threads on about on here.

I've been reading through those topics a lot has I intend to buy an iMac but am a bit worried...

It sounded like most people did not have trouble getting their iMac's repaired for this black/grey smudging problem. Some people had this problem multiple times and got it repaired in each instance, but were eventually told that it wouldn't be repaired again if the problem persists (Apple employees claiming the issue is a result of environmental (humidity, dust) issues).

If you need a new iMac, get one! Don't worry! Don't believe everything you read on the net! Don't forget that fora such as this unfortunately attract the wingers and moaners who love to broadcast their "problems" to all and sundry!

The vast majority of owners never have any problems and hence don't have any need to broadcast them! :)

Ive followed this same advice, not talking about a mac product but another product, went against all the problems people were having and what do you know i happened to be on the bad side of the product. This is why the internet is to a tool to you. See how many people are having the problem or are noticing it and then make your decision, these black smudges dont bother me much but hell if i can get it repaired for free why not..

Your turn of phrase is maybe a little rich, the vast majority those that have genuine issues just use the forums to sound other users out and get some perspective on their perceived problems. I'll concede that ALL forum users should bear in mind that a forum can paint a negative impression but that's just the nature of the beast.:)
