I installed 10.10.4 and now when I start the computer, the screen is black with a white Apple and progress bar instead of the usual light grey and dark grey Apple/progress bar. Anyone else seeing this?

Upgrading from Mavericks? If so, completely normal if your Mac is recent and/or Retina.

If it happened upgrading from 10.10.3 on the Mac in your signature, that's a bit more interesting.

Can anyone ascertain which models get dark and which get grey? My Mac mini 2011 is grey but I've read that 2012 models now boot dark. Is there a reasoning behind which gets what?

To my knowledge it's all Retina Macs and all Macs that were current during Yosemite's release and later. The 2014 Mac mini was released on the same day Yosemite was, so the 2012 could be a new exception to that in 10.10.3.

My 2012 mini is still on Mavericks, so I can't tell you for sure.

I believe it`s related to the firmware, so yes it can vary Mac to Mac, depending on the Model. newer Mac`s will have the black start up screen, older may retain the grey one.

Yeah, it's happening to my 2012 Mac mini, which isn't vey recent..

What really happened was yesterday I was trying unsuccessfully to upgrade to 10.10.4 from the App Store, I got a lot of error messages. So I downloaded a 10.10.4 Combo Update that I found after some Googling and it installed/updated just fine. Then I noticed the black screen/progress bar..

Is this anything to worry about?

Anyone else own a Mac Mini 2011 and can you say if it's a dark or grey boot? I ask because I may have mangled my boot.efi (under S>L>Core Services) with some hacks and wondering if I should be booting in dark instead of grey?

Also, are all boot.efi files identical from mac to mac? Don't seem to have a stock boot.efi in my backups so was wondering if I can simply copy over the stock boot.efi file from my Macbook Air.
