This may be a silly question, as there may be incompatibility issues here I am no aware of, but couldn't someone theoretically write an ap that allowed iPhone users to chat with Blackberry Messenger users and vice versa?

I'm curious about this, too.

I *really* want to get rid of my work BlackBerry and use my iPhone for both personal and work. Do any of the IM apps out there incorporate BB's messenger service? I didn't see it in Palringo and am not sure what MobileChat will include. I imagine their messenger probably is locked up pretty tight so it wouldn't even be a reality.

not to down the iphone but why would you want to get rid of a Blackberry!?!? I have been a Crackberry addict for about 3 years and can't put mine down...

I gladly walked away from my BB. While I loved my BB, the iPhone is thousands of ways better. The BB's web browser shouldn't even be called a web browser. Even with mobile Opera it was torture at best. The interface is very slow and clunky.

Yes, let's see BB Messenger.

yeah the web browser isn't that great but I don't use it for that most of the time. I am a texting/IM/email freak, i have to be for work. I don't understand how a iphone user can use an on screen keyboard!! I could never type with that. Thats the biggest down fall an iphone has, and the main reason why i wont put my bb down.

Funny, I could never type on little keyboards which is why I never bought ANY smart-phone before the iPhone came along. So I guess we have the opposite problem.

It's definitely a good question. I've had my BlackBerry for the past year and wouldn't want to freely give it up unless I'm getting the same or better experience in a new device.

They both have their goods and bads, but I just hate carrying two phones around. BB messenger is the last remaining application iPhone doesn't provide yet. Everything else I mainly use a BB for (e-mail and calendaring) seem about equal to me.

I'm just hoping one of these multi-client IM apps has this service included. So far, Palringo doesn't have it but maybe they have plans to add it.. Or MobileChat (which I haven't researched yet) has it planned.

One can hope. :)

Funny, because I was a hardcore email/im/texting "freak" and I still am. Only difference is now I have a much nicer larger on screen keyboard. I love the iPhone's keyboard, and can text with the best of them. Oh, and I also have a great device in every other category too. BB (even the latest one) is so 2002.

After playing with my Dad's BB I could not find a reason to prefer it to the iPhone!

The whole style of it seems... old fasioned?

(Off topic, but the GPS took about 10 mins to find itself.)

The more I think about this, why not just get Adium or something on the iPhone, use OTR encryption and get the same type app on the BB. Let's get away from RIM's useless infrastructure.

lol I am still stuck on the keyboard issue. I have tried the iPhone and I just can't get use to the on screen keyboard. I went right straight back to my BB. But i do have a touch and love it!! But I don't text/IM/email on it 24/7. And really thats what a BB is made for...

My first 2 days with the iPhone keyboard had me frustrated so I can understand what you are feeling.
But now that ive had it for over 2 weeks i can type on that keyboard faster than any phone i have used (treo, centro(how?), t9). Its just a learning curve.
The full keyboards just take up so much screen realestate. Using a stylus to tap the tiny tiny buttons links/buttons is annoying. I hated using it.

As far as I understand:

BB Messenger uses Text Message (SMS) technology to alert the BB to a new message. This wouldn't be possible on the iPhone due to the SDK

However it's perfectly feasible to get BB Messenger compatible App once we are all running iPhone 3.0

By realistically I can't see BB giving up their exclusive feature that every BB has access too, and in some circumstances can be the selling point for the handset.

Perhaps however there will be a *new* chat service which can be pushed to ALL mobile devices, whether iPhone, BB, Android, Symbian, or whatever. One universal service that we can all use not matter what device we prefer. But this would likely be chargeable, so maybe the networks could produce it :)

The BB Messenger protocol does NOT use SMS. The way that BB Messenger works is that it uses the BlackBerry servers for the connection. There is NO way that you will be able to get a PIN assigned to an iPhone, access the BlackBerry servers, and use it to message people without BlackBerry allowing it and that is highly unlikely.
