The long awaited 10.3 update made its way to BB10 devices yesterday and I was wondering what BB10 users out there thought of it. The update features boasted dramatic changes to the interface, improved battery life, a Siri-like voice assistant, better Android App compatibility, Amazon App Store, "Advanced Interaction" and many bugfixes. This is my experience on the BlackBerry Q10.

I ain't gonna lie, I like most of the interface changes.

The app switcher is much more fluid, looks much better and no longer has the 8 app limit.

The Music App has seen a radical improvement over it's predecessor. Instead of the confusing array of tiles presented before, it is now just a simple list.

The Voice Assistant is a feature that doesn't interest me one bit, but when I tested it, it seemed to work fine. No idea how it compares to Siri, Cortana or Google Now, but when I simply said that I was hungry, it pulled up a load of local restaurants for me.

The Calendar app has also improved dramatically visually.

Android App compatibility seems just the same to me, but Android Apps do appear to run smoother and quicker. Also, push notifications for when said App is closed are now possible, meaning I was getting quite a lot of Crossy Road notifications early after updating as the app nagged me to play. Its also possible to manage screen size for Android Apps, meaning phones like the Q10, Q5 and BB Classic with smaller screens don't have to suffer app distortion. Also the software 'back' button (if set visible) for Android Apps is now much smaller, allowing more screen space for the App.

There are some changes I don't like. The system takes longer to boot. It doesn't feel quite as snappy as before. And the new white themes for the BlackBerry HUB and BlackBerry Messenger are god awful in my opinion.

With an already flat theme becoming even flatter... I find some elements of the UI hard to differentiate and navigate. Not a huge deal since I already know how to use the UI, functionality wise, its nearly identical to what it was before. But I imagine for a user new to BlackBerry 10, it could prove to be confusing. Overall a nice update, but with some design issues.

I'm interested to know everyone else's thoughts. :)

Looks like iOS to me.

Agreed. There is a lot that suggests that iOS 7 was a huge source of inspiration for this update, which I find a shame somehow. BlackBerry OS 10 had its own identity before this update.

To me BB OS is a miss. Looks like things aren't any better on 10.3, unfortunately.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a miss. BBOS is still my favorite phone OS out of them all (I've used iOS 3-6, Android 2-4 and Windows Phone 8). I just find it a real shame they've taken all the personality out of the OS and made it look like everyone elses. I felt the old theme had something going for it.

But functionality-wise, it is still the clear winner for me. Especially with the added Android compatibility and new Blend features. Also the BlackBerry HUB is a godsend for communications.

10.3.1 . 10.3.0 is what shipped with with Passport and Classic.

----------

Cool. I switched on my Z10 and the update was waiting, even if no SIM card was installed.

Just 1GB. Not bad.

I think I may cancel and try again. My connection is 20mb but like I say it trickle loading for me.

Maybe too many people with BB10 compared to server capacity in your country.

Another cool new feature to note is BlackBerry Blend. I guess the closest thing that exists to it at the moment is continuity for iOS and OS X, however instead of being spread out across various apps on the two systems, it is all confined to one app for either Windows or OS X.

It allows use of the BlackBerry HUB, BBM, SMS, MMS, Email, Calendar, File Manager and Calling (either audio or video) from the Blend app on a PC or Mac. It works pretty well, but isn't really a feature that I'll be using often.

Finally got it installed on my Z10. Some very nice new features. Indeed. Nothing that makes me want to humpback from Android or iOS but it's nice to play with these on the Z10.

I'm not liking that BlackBerry Assistant is configured by default to use voice and search online.

I think I now disabled all that. But I don't like that the search button goes to Assistant. I want to be sure no online crap is activated.

Still cannot set input to more than 3 concurrent languages.

There's still an 8 app limit on my Q10.
At least the first 4 frames don't bounce all over anymore though. They stay in the same place now.

A very meh update IMO. Android apps are still major hit and miss. Games seem to be the only thing have a decent chance of working properly.

The only thing I actually like is that it looks a bit cleaner. Still a horribly disjointed UI, but at least it doesn't look like it's from 2008 anymore.
