Well, I can't say that I'm surprised, cnet is reporting that BB is closing up the phone design/manufacturing division

BlackBerry bails on building its own phones

"The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners," CEO John Chen said in a statement.

The numbers do not look good for BB
BlackBerry posted fiscal second-quarter results on Wednesday that saw it swing to a loss of $372 million, or 71 cents a share, from a year-ago profit of $51 million, or 24 cents a share. Revenue fell by a third to $334 million.

Really a shame, the way the company went.

A shame, yes. But justice as far as I'm concerned. Not only did they get complacent and arrogant due to their marketshare, but their quality and aftersales support suffered greatly as a result.

Absolutely serves them right.

That's what hubris does.
I think an even mix of Hubris, and complacency. I think they blew it, with regard to the keyboard, they thought that it would trump everything, including an inferior user experience.

I see a similar behavior out of Apple, at least with their Mac line.

As for BlackBerry, its hard to see that they'll really survive as a service company. I expect them to be swallowed up by another corporation, as their IP portfolio is quite enticing.

London
First Motorola then Nokia now blackberry.
The only one that's left is Sony Ericsson or Sony.

I personally don't think they have long now that the iPhone 7 comes with FeliCa.

a better place
Given they have essentially put the BB software on the play store for any Android handset and are offering a subscription service to their apps - it likely makes more financial sense at this current stage.

That's too bad. RIP. Blackberry had their time. They owned the smartphone market (or, at least the enterprise smartphone market) in the 2000s. I remember growing up and using my father's when he'd let me. I thought it was the coolest thing. Ah, well. It's a different time now.
