On the track
A friend of mine has a blackbook and I finally convinced her not to shut off her MB and to just close the lib and let it sleep. It didn't work out so great. :(

She closes the lid and it doesn't sleep. It stays on, display and all. The HD doesn't turn off the display stays at full brightness. It just won't sleep. She noticed when she would go back to it in the morning the battery would be dead.

Can anybody give me any ideas about how to fix it?

The Stig

P.S. We can't call apple, they won't help her because she got it used from the third party and she doesn't have the money to pay apple for the call.

Do you not have an Apple Store near you? They fixed this problem in my macbook...

Does Sleep work from the Apple icon in the top left?
Try repairing permissions (in Disk Utility), and resetting the PRAM

did the third party have insomniax installed on the macbook? that program disables sleep when closing the lid.

No, there is no apple store close to us. It would be a 12 hours drive to a apple store.

Yes, it will sleep when I click it from the apple menu. I will try repairing the permissions.

As far as I know they do not have insomniax installed on it. I'm pretty sure it was a fresh install.

Any more ideas?

Unfortunately it sounds like a hardware issue (it really could be something as simple as a slightly-wrongly-placed magnet)

Check if there are any Apple authorised retailers that could repair your machine (for free), closer than the Apple Store :)

Also I tried deleting

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist–(username is your name or System Administrators name)

I trashed them and then I reset the PMU (Power Management Unit) by holding down the power button with the battery out and it not plugged in.

THIS DID WORK ONCE! And only once, I turned it back on and closed the lib and it went to sleep. I opened the lib and waited 30 second or so and then closed the lib and it didn't sleep. :(
