I tried to unlock my friends iphone 3gs 3.1.2 on his PC with Blackra1n. My first attempt failed so I tried again. Everything seemed like it worked but when I open the blackra1n app it immediately collapses as soon as it starts to open.

Can anyone help?! I tried reinstalling blackra1n numerous times with no success... I also tried to jailbreak with my macbook pro. It feels like I have a partially installed blackra1n which I cannot delete or install over!!

Does anyone have any advice on deleting the app so I can try again on my Mac?.. Unfortunately, his phone auto synced with that partial blackrain app on it so a restore wont work. Also, his bootRom is to new to pwnage it. Any other ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Rather than give us your conjectures and what you "feel," you could try telling us exactly what the symptoms are. What happens when you try to restore? Do you get an error message? What happens if you just turn the phone on? Does it fail to boot? Does it go to recovery mode? Does it get stuck at the apple boot logo? And last, but certainly not least: what the hell do you mean by "[its] icon collapses"?

Thank you for your reply. I did not try to restore it yet. No error message in itunes, everything is as it should be. Phone boots when turned off then back on, also boots with a reset (home and sleep/wake button for 10 sec) As far as I can tell the phone is working fine except for the non-working blackra1n icon.

What I mean by collapsing is that the blackra1n app begins to open, and less than 1 second later it closes and I end up looking right back at the springboard.

Okay, so your phone is jailbroken (completely, not partially jailbroken...the fact that you have blackra1n on your springboard is proof of that). But something is causing blackra1n to crash on startup. I've seen people talk about that problem before, but I've never heard of a solution. I would try restoring (I assumed you had tried to restore, since you said in your original post that restoring "won't work") and setting up as a new phone. Then run blackra1n again before you sync anything. Use blackra1n to install Cydia and update all essential packages in Cydia. Then and only then sync data back.

Note: this procedure will result in loss of saved text messages.

Thank you for the advice. I did as you said above and this worked for a couple days. My friend just called me now saying his phone was off for about 10 minutes and when he tried to power back on he received a "crash error message".. I asked him what exactly it said but he did not remember. He also said his five-column springboard is back to four. I am going to take a look at it in a couple hrs and will post what I find.

That sounds like a springboard crash to the Sad Mac. Just have him hit the restart on the sad mac box, then when it restarts, drag the 5th icon back into the dock.
