I have an iPhone 3G that I haven't upgraded to in a while. I am still running 3.1 and I'm wondering if the blackra1n unlock is only compatible with 3.1.2 or is it good with 3.1.2 and versions before. Hope this makes sense and thanks for listening.

It will jailbreak 3.1. I would strongly suggest using redsn0w instead, as that was tested on 3.1 and is, in my opinion, a better app than blackra1n.

Blackra1n is the JB tool, Blacksn0w to unlock.

Use Redsn0w for jailbreak as thelatinist says, fewer "possible" issues.

Running into some problems trying to unlock the iPhone using redsn0w and 3.1. I'm being told that it doesn't recognize the ipsw I selected for my firmware.

Is it possible to download and restore to 3.0 firmware when I am already running 3.1?

Is it also possible to provide a link to a youtube video showing the process on how to do it.

You can upgrade and downgrade the firmware on a 3G at will and jailbreak at any version. Are you selecting the correct firmware, should start with 1,2

Use this site to get official Apple IPSW's http://www.poorlad.com/iCommunity/

Get a tutorial from iClarified or Hackintosh

ended up going to 3.1.2 and using blackra1n. Easy as pie. Thanks for all the advice and input.

You know how when you go to gelete something from the app store, everything gets all jiggly?? Well the apps I downloaded via Rock like doom, quake, wolfenstien, dtunes & n64; so not jiggle & do not seem to be deletable.

The proper way to delete those is thru the Rock app if that's how you installed them.

Using CyDelete usually works, but uninstalling them is better.
