Okay, I was debating for a while in joining the jb club, and finally decided to take the plunge about 5 minutes ago based on all the happy postings I have been reading. Here's my ordeal, I jb'd the phone via Snow Leopard using the Blackra1n download. Everything worked, my rebooted and synced back up with iTunes. When I unlocked my phone, I could not find the icon for Blackra1n anywhere on my phone. I even tried search my iphone for Blackra1n but nothing showed up. So I jb'd my phone again, and the same result. I think my iphone is jb'd, but I can't tell for sure. I am okay in understanding this stuff, so I don't think it is a user error. My phone model is MB717LL and the firmware is 3.01. What did I do wrong and how do I get the icon to show up?

Normally when you jb, the blackra1n app will show up along with all the others so theres no need for looking for it..Your case seems quite strange, I dno if others have had it..whatever the case;
If I were you I would try and jailbreak it on another laptop/Operating system and see if it works there..It doesn't matter where you jailbreak it as long as you sync it to your personal laptop/pc.

from the geohot blog:

blackra1n RC3 is also live for both Windows and Mac!!! Clean firmware 3.1.2 and baseband 05.11.07 are recommended.

you have 3.01. My guess is that's your problem. Update your firmware, then blackra1n again, or use a different JB.

Thanks! I was wondering if that was the issue. So does that mean my phone is currently not jb'd at the moment until I use the correct application? So is redsnow a good jb app for my firmware? Thanks for your quick responses! This is a very supportive community.:)

Your phone is not jailbroken, no. Redsn0w is a great jailbreak. You might want to check out the new features in 3.1.x, though. If you like them it might be worth upgrading. Will you want to unlock?

To be honest, I like my current version because I use the USB tethering and do not want to lose it by going to the latest - especially if I decide to stay vanilla. However, what interests me about jb'ing my phone is full customization, google voice and multitasking apps. I want to mess with one of friends who keeps getting in my face with his damn droid. He keeps showing me how cool it is and how customizable it is. The droid ringtone is driving me nuts every time I hear a new email arrive on his phone when he keeps it on his desk. He likes to brag about it and ask me if his phone intimidates me with it's cylon red eye. I thought I would venture to the dark side with the iPhone and see what's available to 1up his damn droid! I know it's childish, but I like to have a little fun with it!:D

RE:Blackra1n worked...not really

Blackra1n was made to jailbreak 3.1.2, you can update to 3.1.2 in itunes then use blackra1n or use redsn0w to jailbreak your current firmware. To use redsn0w you need to have a 3.0.1 firmware file for iphone which you can download legally and free from http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ (I know it has ipod in url but it has firmware files for ipod touch and iphone, get the iphone 3.0.1), download it with firefox because safari will think it is a .zip file.

When you have the firmware file use redsn0w to jailbreak your iphone, you will need to put your iphone into DFU mode (redsn0w will tell you when and how to do this) and if the app freezes quickly unplug your iphone and plug it back in and it will finish jailbreaking.

The more apps and files you have on your iphone the higher risk you have of it failing. And this will void your warranty, but a restore might make apple think you haven't jailbroken it.

I think apple updated something so you might not be able to unlock but i think unlock works with blackra1n now.

If I upgrade to the latest firmware to use Blackra1n, is there an application on Cydia that enables tethering? I read the tutorial on iClarified using something called Fuga and utilizing SSH - the procedure seemed a little long. Is there a simple application that can be installed to tether with version 3.12 iphone firmware? I would prefer that the app allow you to tether via bluetooth and/or usb. I really appreciate your help!

ok well back to the orginal topic, my phone was JB before on each firmware, i went to AT&T and now im back with T-Mobile, i did blackra1n and i cant find it on my phone, i just need the sn0w to unlock it

i understand what you mean gman, try restarting your computer on a mac and pc using different usb ports and see if it works, and if your on 3.1.0, i believe the redsn0w JB would be better, but your not worried about unlock right? so just upgrade to 3.1.2. if your not worried about switching carriers

Thanks, I did upgrade to 3.1.2 and I jb'd the phone with Blackra1n successfully! I love the iphone so much more now with the themes and customizations! The only thing I am not sure about is if I need to use the terminal application to change the root password? I did not download openssh, so do I still need to change the root password on the iphone? Also, is there a good Google Voice application someone could recommend? Oh, and is there an application that can change the system sounds, like when an email comes in?

If you are sure OpenSSH is not installed (Check Cydia/Manage/Packages to verify) then you do not need to change any passwords.

Nothing has worked.....

I have been hacking at my iphone for several days now and nothing has worked. When I finally put the sim card in, it goes to the recovery screen and won't do anything....getting a little pissed... Trying to use T-mobile on my phone and it won't recognize the sim card as anything but foreign...Please help before my phone becomes a skipping stone...Yes, it's a new sim card and works in my other phone...

Obviously, the phone is not properly unlocked !

I have been trying to figure out what happened to my phone since yesterday after jb'ing it. About every 1-2 hours after I leave my phone alone and come back to it to check mail or browse the web, I keep getting a message that the cellular network could not be activated. The only way to fix this is turning airplane mode on and off. This never happened prior to jb'ing and all I installed and used are the main apps like winterboard, bigboss paper, backgrounder, themes and some ringtones. I also got the 5 dock, 3g unrestrict, mx tube, lockinfo and sbsettings. Would any of these apps interfere with the cell network after sitting idle?
