Or is there a better program. I tried Illustrators 3D tool, but I think the object may be too complex for it as it has 45 degree bevels at the joins.

There's a book called Blender 3D: Architecture, Buildings and Scenery. Also http://www.blender3darchitect.com/ Heavily based of of the yafaray raytracing engine. Remember that blender is open sourced. Save your work a lot and in stages!
