Blinking wheel in status menu

I upgraded to Yosemite and after the installation process I realized that there is a blinking wheel (similar to the Preferences wheel, see attachment) in the status menu. It appears from time to time and after a few seconds it disappears again. This is very annoying. Does anyone know what it means?
