Say for instance I decide to put a triple slot height graphics card in my 2012 Mac Pro, the second 16x slot would be blocked. Could I use a PCI-E extension cable to make use of the second 16x slot? I appreciate any PCI-E device wouldn't have a 'secure slot' but it could be secured in the case by other means.

The triple slot card would be this or similar:

radeon-hd-7990-radeon-hd-7970-x2-geforce-gtx-690,U-8-357488-22.jpg

I've been looking at something like this:

Anyone have experience of this? Is it possible?

I askedmyself that question too - I don't see any reason why this doesen't work. The only problem you're gonna have will be how to install the PCIe device - because they are fixed by the slot and the blend - with a PCIe riser you don't have something like this.

Thanks for a quick reply, do you think the clearance where the PCI-E Riser portion plugs into the PCI-E on the Mac would be wide enough? say the Triple height card covers the 16x slot I want access to is blocked and the width between the card and the slot is X. Would X be enough of a width to allow the installation of a riser?

That really depends on the cooler.
With the card attached it looks like very close, but there are other 3 slot coolers that aren't that wide. You have to try, 10£ aren't that much to spend.
