Is it possible to block outgoing calls to certain numbers?

I have a few contacts that I've blocked on my phone, people I never want to hear from again.
I've added them to the block list, but almost called one by accident because you need to have them in your contacts to block them.

Usually the issue is more in the car where the address book isn't group on the screen, just all contacts in a list. Very easy to bump the wrong part of the screen when driving.

Where is the option to block all communication to the contact or a number?

Searching the internet is useless and all advice appears tell you how to block incoming calls though described as outgoing calls.

I have un-named numbers in my Blocked List, so there must be a way to block numbers not in your contact list - I have plenty.

Maybe you can just add them to your contacts, block them, and delete their contact - would that work? I'm not sure how I managed

Yes, you can delete the contact after you block them. Their name won't show anymore, but their number will remain in the Blocked Contacts list.

Or you can simply block the number when it comes in, no cards needed.

From the Phone app, tap Recents, then tap the Info button next to the phone number or contact that you want to block. Scroll down, then tap Block this Caller.

So another variation on what one can do: delete the "offending" contacts, turn on Silence Unknown Callers so does not ring if they do call, block the number when does call, done.

A good option if want to not be bothered by anyone that is not "important" enough to get a Contacts entry.

Of course this assumes that one has the flexibility to able to delay acting on incoming calls (eg. not dealing with sales call, support calls from possibly any number, etc).
