Blogs - What Is This...?

a blog (web log) is like an online journal or diary that you can let the world read...
it's great for sharing thoughts with your friends, especially since, on most blogs, you can leave comments for others...

Anyone have recommendations on which blogger to use on their site? I've looked at a few and feel like just writing my own. Also, for those blogs with a calendar and all those extra features - is there an easy way to tell it, like in config settings, not to display them but just the blog?

Well, I have used Wordpress and Drupal, and both work quite well. Both certainly allow you to disable "calendar" and other features. Both also require a very good knowledge of CSS if you want your site to look good (as well as access to a MySQL Database and an Apache server with PHP). Drupal is much more sophisticated, but Wordpress is a lot easier to use.

If you don't want to install your own server software, I've also used Livejournal, which is a good, free service. I haven't heard any problems from Blogger users now that they've been bought out by Google.

Personally I kinda have a hacked blog setup that works quite nice.

I use a news posting program such as cutenews to do my main posts. Then for "my thoughts / images" I use a variety of simple individual PHP scripts. Basic things such as editing a txt file I have included in my blog. Really basic but works nice.

I guess it just depends what you want it to do. :)
 
Some people use LiveJournal for their blogs, and you can sign up for free now rather than signing up for free only via invites <-- could be new news to some. Others use Xanga, as mentioned earlier.

Of course, I like mine completely customizable. :D

a blog is an opportunity for you to really express your life
some people use it for pictures, poem's, rants...etc

One of the advantages of using livejournal rather than having a blog on your site is it can be viewed in peoples friends pages. As all my friends use livejournal so do I and I get to read all their posts all on one page, without having to go around various sites. It is however not as customisable.
