Okay, shoot me down but with the new 16:9 ratio 27 Inch iMac and the fact that Apple are really playing up it's HD credentials who thinks we may see a Blu- ray BTO option in the next update?

I've just got this idea that it's inevitable as the whole "bag of hurt" argument is not so strong now as Blu-ray Licensing packages were apparently simplified / made far easier for manufacturers this year. Also, there was a rumour in the previous few weeks suggesting Apple intended to include it in this update but at the 11th hour decided not to.

Personally I could envisage come March / April / May 2010 Apple offering it as an option across the range of their Desk Top computers, including the Apple TV. Anyway, just idol thoughts;)

I've read the "speculation" that adopting the 16:9 format display was a prelude to BR . . . but seriously, Apple could have offered the BR drive as an "optional install" right?

The 16:9 screen is for ATSC and HD/HDTV right now. If BR is offered in the future, that would be okay, but the 16:9 screen isn't a signal that it's a guarantee of future adoption.

think i read somewhere that to add blu ray suport is a load of OS work - including getting lots of elements certified as compliant by the blu ray association.

suggestion was that it would be difficult to develop and keep it under wraps - with the regular OS test releases to the Mac community and Blu Ray organisation 'leaking' that they had Apple support coming.

I'm being optimistic (which is a ridiculous word to use about something so overdue already!) and voted "Reckon 2010 we'll see a simultaneous BTO Blu-ray option across all or part of the Apple range."

I actually think an Apple-supplied BD drive could be a BTO option on a particular model first, whatever model that is (probably the Mac Pro after this week's Mac Mini / MacBook / iMac refreshes), but regardless of which one, once the software is out there for OS X they might as well offer it up for anyone with a mac who wants to buy a Blu-ray drive,
maybe as a paid-for component (like MPEG-2 for QT Pro) so that all the people who aren't interested in Blu-ray don't have to have anything to do with it if they like.
