iPod Blu-ray digital copies: on DVD!

I can only vouch for this on "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," but I was shocked that the free digital copy was on a DVD-ROM included in the package. I thought I would have to find someone with a BD-ROM drive on a PC or just do without. Nope. Seems that Universal did something right.

If anybody else has bought other Blu-ray Disc movies with the digital copy, I'd love to know if they're the same. It does suck that the digital copy is the theatrical version and not the extended cut, but beggars...choosers.

wow sounds good. now if only digital copies were around in the uk....
 
I bought "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and that came with the blu ray version, digital copy and normal dvd all for $29.99 at Walmart
 
I believe 20th Century Fox has been doing this for a while.

I do have a BD drive, but I get movies from NetFlix.
 
Disney is going one better with its release of "Sleeping Beauty". It contains a DVD copy of the film! :eek:
 
Buyers beware - I bought the US BD of SpeedRacer and it had a digital copy (DVD-ROM), shamefully described as needing iTunes (PC and Mac specs listed) on the label attached to the outer packaging, but then when you open the case up the disc contained Windows-only WMV files and nothing else. From googling about the issue apparently I could complain with an online form for an iTunes gift certificate for the iTunes movie, but really the attraction of a 'digital copy' for me would be that I wouldn't have to download a big movie file, just copy it off the disc. I still enjoyed the BD and didn't really buy it for the 'digital copy', but if it had been a major reason I bought it I'd be annoyed.

Still kudos to Warners for not region coding their BDs, which meant I could watch it on my UK PS3 in the first place!
 
So Dark Knight is almost here and it comes with a digital copy. Do these discs work on mac at all? What do I need to play it? can someone link us to some more info on this?

Maybe I could just call WB and ask?

Should be fine if it lists an iTunes Digital Copy.

May as well hunt down one with a Digital Copy because ripping the DVD has been a pain in the ar*e.
 
Yes, these work on a Mac. They basically sync with the ITMS and you enter a code that comes with the movie. It then downloads the file from the DVD and it's like a protected movie that you bought from iTunes. Nice job of the studios doing this about two years after they should've been. Now I can start complaining about why there isn't an HD option on said digital copy, but then I remember that I bought a Blu-ray Disc for a reason.

So are the rights similar to iTunes content - can you load it onto a number of authorised machines, or move it easily to a new machine when you upgrade your computer?

I'm assuming it's the same as iTunes content. The file info says it uses FairPlay version 3. I have only played the videos on my MBP and AppleTV, so I can't tell you for sure that you get the 5 copies you normally get with iTunes.

Well it can't at the moment. Apple doesn't sell HD Movies on the iTunes Store. Maybe we'll see an announcement at MacWorld.

this is slightly off topic, but I bought the regular version of DK...not the extended with the digital copy and it won't copy with HB or MTR for my iphone :(

I thought the same just for a second until I realized that the Blu-ray Disc was an HD copy. :) While the studio could fit a 4GB HD copy of the movie on the DVD, it's not really that big of a deal to have. The digital copies are meant to be used on portable devices, none of which will play HD video. HD movies/TV shows are more of an AppleTV thing, which is mostly a moot point if you bought the Blu-ray Disc.

The "Digital Copy" files are of a similar size and quality to what you would get if you purchased a movie off iTunes (think iPod/iPhone preset). In fact, they may even be the same encodes.

Apple is not going to allow Disney, Fox, or any of the other studios to offer an iTunes-compatible (and Fairplay DRM) file that is of higher quality than they currently offer on the iTunes Store.

Additionally, the studios would also likely demand HDCP support on their Digital Copy HD files just like they do on Apple TV rentals. Currently, Apple has not fully implemented (or turned on) HDCP within iTunes 8. When that happens, we will likely get HD rentals and possibly purchases on the Mac/PC.

I guess at that point the studios could then start offering Digital Copy files in HD. However, they would have to include both an SD and HD version to maintain compatibility with the iPod and iPhone.
 
Can't Find the freaking code

I bought the blu ray copy and put the digital copy in the pc but there isn't a code in the lil packet on the cover. where is it at!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!thanks in advance :)

The two I bought had a piece of shiny paper that was basically a promo for the digital copy. It had a code written in the same kind of font you'd see on a game that had a similar code. If that piece of paper isn't in your case, go take it back.

I bought the Dark Knight on Blu-Ray and it came with the Digital Copy. The Digital Copy was placed on a DVD, but downloaded from iTunes. Basically, you're downloading a copy of the movie from iTunes for free.

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure the download comes from the DVD and not from iTunes. Dark Night transfered in just a few minutes, much quicker than I would expect from an iTunes download.
