Yes I know Steve Jobs doesn't want blu ray drives for some strange reason, I'm sure he has odd one.

Can you add a blu ray drive in the 2nd DVD/CD drive bay? If so does it work well?

Or does it have to be external?

I would like blu ray in my Mac that simple, mainly for storage, and maybe if I find a way to burn HD home movies. I read other ways to get HD on DVD but that's not exactly what I want.

I'm not jumping ship, but all these external drives take up a lot of room.

Thanks.

You just can't play Bluray movies on OS X; you need to install Windows either via BootCamp or in a VM to play those.

For data, any SATA Bluray drive will work.

I have a Pro 1,1 that i put a Sony Blu ray burner in and it has done well for 3+ years now. But I do have to use software to rip blu=ray movies if I want to watch them on the computer.

Back up

I am not really looking to watch movies, I want to use blu ray discs as back ups for iTunes and iPhoto mainly. External drives die eventually, I like discs. I have a huge amount of pictures and movies, I do back up, but I would like a back up on a blu ray disc, or if USB sticks went down in price big time! Anything 50GB or more, I still would need a lot of blu ray discs. Also with digital copies out now I need even more room.

One other thing to note with internal Blu-Ray drives for Mac Pro's. There have been reports of wake from sleep problems and random drive seeking noises with a Blu-Ray drive installed.

I have a LG WH10LS30 in my 2010 Mac Pro, and it seems to work just fine. I was able to burn a playable (in my PS3) video disc.

I haven't had sleep issues, but I do get drive seeking noises unless I have a disc in there (though I'm still testing that out).

My dog freaks out whenever my drives make noise so I'm hoping just keeping a disc in there will let him calm down.

I have an early 2008 model Mac Pro that still uses IDE optical drives! I purchased a LG UH10LS20 blu-ray combo drive and this koutech ide to sata adapter.. It fits SO snug I wouldnt want anything else.. except in mac os x and windows it detects the ide and the sata signal.. so it lists three disks under the device manager.. when I eject one of them.. nothing happens.. the other one it works fine. The option eject works fine in windows and mac os x for the 2nd drive, my blu ray.

Yes, I get random drive seeking on it.

No thanks to Apple. ;)

Unfortunately, it's also rather convoluted to get it to work (might be frustrating for those that aren't all that computer savvy, particularly if they can't get it to work). :(

And you can always rip them to suitable format and then watch if that other method doesn't work. But yes, any SATA drive should work.
Still likely an easier way to go though, and has some other options/uses, such as tossing the ripped file on a laptop to watch while on a long flight. :)

You can use it as an archival media, such as making copies of your iTunes and iPhoto files in a MP (but OS X can't play copyrighted Blu Ray material natively, as Apple's never licensed the technology).

I didn't say it's simple :p However, Cave Man has said that it wouldn't require much work from e.g. Plex developers to integrate Blu-Ray playback to their piece of software to enable one-click playback by using the method he described in that thread (or something similar). I think he even contacted Plex devs but they said they are not interested about it.

But wouldn't you prefer carrying a 5.25" external Blu-Ray player and a suitcase full of Blu-Rays in an airplane? :D;) They are so spacious

But since they're not interested, its still a bit on the convoluted/confusing side for novice users to get done properly, since Apple won't give users what they want (not surprised of course, given their history). :(

Certainly. I'll be happy to let them confiscate my movies and player so they can watch them in the break room, while I get hauled off to the pokey. :p

I'm having that exact problem with my 2010 MP. Installed a UH10LS20 (LG) drive, works great but no sleep and the drive makes random and rather annoying noises. The thing that really adds insult to injury is that I can boot up in Windows 7 and my MP goes to sleep with no problem. And no sqeeks and peeps out of the blu-ray drive.

Needless to say it's a bit of a bummer as I would prefer my machine to go to sleep on it's own. Now interestingly enough, if I have disc in the drive, no noises and my machine will sleep.

I guess I'll just have to leave a disc in the drive. Annoying workaround, but it addresses both issues.
