Hey guys,

I have read multiple guides on ripping blu ray movies on both the mac and pc. I currently use makemkv and handbrake to rip blu ray movies, which I then play on my mac Pro in my home theater. I recently found out, though, that none of the blu ray movies I have ripped are in 5.1 surround. I did research again and tried multiple combinations of different programs, but I have yet to find a way to rip blu ray in 5.1. Do any of you guys have a blu ray ripping method, for the mac or pc, that works and is somewhat simple (i.e., fewer than five steps/programs).

Thanks in advanced!

Are you sure the rips don't have 5.1, as opposed to the Mac Pro isn't playing them in 5.1? Because by default Quicktime/iTunes will only play in stereo and not 5.1. The same files played in Plex/XMBC should reveal all the 5.1 glory. If you want Quicktime/iTunes to play 5.1 you'll need to install Perian and hack around with various preferences.

You need to upgrade (free) to Handbrake 0.9.5. Most Blu Rays have DTS tracks for home theatre sound but, up until the latest release, Handbrake could do nothing with it and gave you plain stereo instead. The new version has a built in DTS to AC3 converter, which will give you a 6-channel discreet home theater Dolby digital sound track.

For your old movies, there's no option but to re-code them from your source file (the ripped file if you still have it, or from the BD) as what you have now will not have a 5.1 surround sound track on it.

Then you must have disabled those audio tracks in MakeMKV because they are enabled by default.

Did you see the first post of the Blu-ray to Apple TV thread?
