I hope this is a step forward in shutting up all the blu-ray nay sayers that endlessly swarm these boards. Wishful thinking, I know.

Anyway, I'm hoping Apple starts to open up this "bag of hurt" and realize it's future potential now :)

my biggest draw from buying bluray though i have a ps3 is the fact that i can only play them on my ps3 at the moment

id like my movies to be somewhat portable in a sense (aka laptop if need be)

My Netflix is still on DVDs, not Blu-Ray. But I don't inherently have anything against Blu-Ray. I'll switch when Apple does (or not), but I don't really care either way. I don't own any movies, and only watch rented movies, so quality isn't a huge issue for me, even though it's certainly a "nice to have".

Perhaps if/when the demographics for consumers who buy BluRay content substantially overlaps with the demographics of consumers who buy Apple desktop and laptops, Apple will see some profit incentive.

Or

Is BluRay Dead And Just Doesn't Know It?

Without more support from the porn industry . . .

Eh. The porn industry isn't nearly as important this go around because it's reliance on physical media distribution isn't nearly as big as it was in the pre-internet days when the Beta vs VHS battles were going on.

This doesn't mean that blu-ray will not move forward without them, it just means that they didn't have the weight to throw around in the (now defunct) format war.

There are some of the blu-rays that have digital content on them already.

But I agree, I like how easy I can rip my dvd's to my hard drive so I can have them on the go etc.

But, my blu-ray collection is growing. I haven't purchased a DVD in god knows how long (I have over 500 of them). I do know I am not re-purchasing my dvd's on blu-ray thou. No double dipping this time around.

I have been saying this for a while now. Between reading the digital bits and the sales figures they put out each quarter, blu-ray isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

I do wish Apple would at least release a mac with a blu-ray player thou and or an upgrade for the pro line. That would be nice.

My biggest issue with Blu-Ray that stops me from adoption is price for player. the fact is, that getting a player of any real quality is going to cost about 300 bucks. Even for me that’s pricey. I am not going to get a PS3 (Which I am told is a good player) because I don’t game (not to mention the games are expensive and don’t have much appeal to me). Of course my HDTV is only about 36 inches and I really don’t get much of a high def signal from it and I have no desire to replace that anytime soon.

That and the fact that Blu-Ray discs are more expensive for current movies (although not much more). It’s just way too expensive for me considering I have such a large DVD library already. That (and I know I am going to get flack for this) I don’t really notice the difference that much (this is more to do with my TV though) to justify it. DVD is good enough until the prices go down enough to the level that DVD players were a year or so ago. Especially when I am buying fewer and fewer discs because the movies are crap.

Actually if you watch the sales.... You will get that 300 blu-ray player for half price. I know because that is what I did. I wouldn't be surprised if you find them for even cheaper this year for the holidays.

If you shop on Tuesdays you can find the discs at pretty damn good prices.

You may have a point on the player - the problem is that is still too much for my blood - besides, the player is only half of the problem. I am going to have to wait until I can afford it. I cannot right now. The cost to me is not worth the supposed improvements which my TV is never really going to see in the first place. I will get one eventually, but I won’t drop cash down on crap players, or 1.0 profile players that are never going to improve anything.

As far as the disc prices - They are still too expensive and as you said - you have to get it on first week. I can’t afford to replace my library and I don’t buy enough movies. It’s not just quite there for me yet. It’s maybe 75% of the way, but the cost is not something that I can afford.

Now if I can get a Blu Ray player as a gift (a decent one), then I might have some incentive and even then it will be slow - due to crap movies.

EDIT: Right now I am perfectly happy with what I have now. The biggest plus that people pitch Blu-Ray for is the quality angle. That just (for me) is not a compelling of enough argument. There hasn’t been much out there that has told me “DVD is dead, we should all get Blu-Ray tomorrow”. I haven’t seen much yet to convince me yet. And even when I do get one, I won’t see any improvement until I drop big bucks on a new TV and a decent sound system.

I noticed Wal-Mart will have Blu-ray players for $78 this Black Friday. I also picked up Up, Cars and Monster's Inc on Blu-ray from Amazon for $11 each and Star Trek for $20 the other day. It's starting to get reasonable.

I don't know about the players under $300 being crap. I just picked up an LG BD370 for $150 off Amazon. It has great customer reviews. I get excellent video and sound from it so I am quite happy. It also has quick load times and is considered quite reliable.

Now if you are talking about all the extras like wireless and other stuff. Well that does not matter to me. It does support Netflix downloads but and has an Ethernet port but I doubt I will use either.

If what you want is great video and sound quality players are available in the $150 range. For people whom really want tons of extra features the only option is to build a Media Center PC and you can have a total media interface.

I doubt most people could care less about BD Live or anything else except possibly Netflix downloads (it is all too confusing for the average consumer). Just like with TV, VHS or DVD they just want to turn on the movie, veg out and be entertained.

I was just going to say that. Target also has a Sony BD player for $148. My problem with BD (and I do have a player with an HDTV) is that I am heavily restricted with how I can use the media, which sucks.

Unlike BD advocates that run teh boards, I do NOT like disks in laptops, I don't like bringing disks with me when I travel, and I would like to rip disks I own to my laptop without having to resort to breaking the law.

The closest I personally care to get to BD on a MacBook is an external drive just to rip it to Quicktime files. But that's my opinion.

How is this any different than DVD? DVDs are encrypted also.

I'm considering a drive for this Christmas. Star Trek has been on super sale too for the BD version. I have the DVD right now from the library. :D

For one I don't think DVD is dead. It is far from being dead. I would give it about another 5 years thou and as Blu-ray starts picking up the pace, which is as we speak, I can dvd sales going down. Plus take into fact that you really don't see any tv's that are not HD anymore. I can't remember when I saw a tv that wasn't HD. This doesn't mean people still do not have an older tv in their homes still.

No one is forcing you to upgrade so enjoy your collection. That is what it is what you got it for!

Yea same here, I also took advantage of that Disney Deal. And that blu-ray player at Walmart is a steal. I reckon we will see much much more deals this week :)

I am not arguing that DVD is dead though. Dying, maybe depending on who you ask.

My mentality is that it is very jarring to have different versions of things. Why bother having the DVD’s when the blue ray is arguably so much better? Hey that’s my mentality. I don’t like the idea of having part of my library on DVD and the smaller minority of it in Blu-ray (although arguably the same thing happened with my VHS collection). It kinda makes me think of it being a waste... Again, that’s just me.

Ok, I should be clearer, I was referring to retail and not online necessarily. I don;t like dropping big bucks online when I can get it in store today - again, I am impulsive and hate to wait. I was more or less referring to the no-name brands or the low end brands that are in the 200 dollar range normally (Magnavox, Insignia, and so on). Hey, If I am going to drop a couple of hundred bucks on a player, I want it to be worth my money, not something that sucks.

Now if you are talking about all the extras like wireless and other stuff. Well that does not matter to me. It does support Netflix downloads but and has an Ethernet port but I doubt I will use either.

That’s the thing though - for me I have to have some requirements since I don’t have my own internet - I use my neighbors and even if I didn’t - no way can I run ethernet in my house without it looking like an eyesore.

If what you want is great video and sound quality players are available in the $150 range. For people whom really want tons of extra features the only option is to build a Media Center PC and you can have a total media interface.
I am not looking for tons of extra features (which rules out a Media center PC - out of the question for me), I just want something is current and can get some new things. I would hate to get a player now only to find out that its never going to get any upgrades or can’t support the newer discs.

I doubt most people could care less about BD Live or anything else except possibly Netflix downloads (it is all too confusing for the average consumer). Just like with TV, VHS or DVD they just want to turn on the movie, veg out and be entertained.
I would at least like those options - that’s why I refuse to buy into older technology - If I am going to spend the money on a blue-ray disc and player, I am going to take as much advantage of it as possible - otherwise it’s going to be a disappointment.

Look, my arguments re things that make sense to me - right now, unless the initial investment is a lot lower, I just won’t take the plunge - its just not compelling enough for me yet. Right now, my DVD collection works just fine and getting a Blu Ray won’t change those discs at all - I haven’t seen much that is compelling me to make the switch. Of course I should point out that none of my friends or family got a DVD player until they either got a PS2 or they could get a player at a near $100 price point. Sure the PS3 had a blue ray player (and a good one at that for what I heard), but to me it seems like a waste to buy a game console and not play games with it, and 60 dollar plus games are not all that enticing.

It’s still not quite there for me yet.

Heres my opinoin this is what i tell people when they get a HDTV if you can get a blu Ray player you will notice a big diffrence from watching DVDs on HDTV when you watch it on blu ray. second Blu ray still plays dvds so you dont have to go replace it but trust me, if you wanna get best picutere when watching tv go for blu.
