Anyone know what this blue outline around the icon means? Seen also surrounding the home (house ) icon. Not using dark mode.
Only noticed since update to Catalina (10.15). 2017 MBP. Thanks.

It's the focus indicator. You've got full keyboard access turned on : System Prefs > Keyboards > Shortcuts, there's a checkbox at the bottom of the window to toggle that.

Thanks Irucker! Q: Is this just an accessibility indicator or does/can it server other purposes (as far as you know)?

It's older than accessibility, but related. When it's on, you can use tab keys to move through all the buttons and arrow keys to move within multipart buttons, and then the space or return key to "press" them - the focus indicator shows which ones will react to the keypress. This can be faster than moving the cursor over to them, especially if you have a physical mouse instead of a trackpad.
