Bluetooth 4.0 vs 2.1 + EDR

What are the advantages of Bluetooth 4.0 vs 2.1 + EDR as far as Mac Minis? I found several articles about them concerning phones but how do they effect Mini operation? I seems they use less power and have longer range but I also read 4.0 has lower band width? Thanks
 
USB 4.0 has some different protocols. The only one I can imagine being useful in the near future is the low energy one. Theoretically, Apple could update their bluetooth accessories to BT 4.0 so that we don't have to change the batteries that often.

The bandwith is IMHO not important at all, as WiFi is more advanced anyways (even for pairing --> WiFi direct). Oh, and BT 4.0 might be used for AirPlay direct, but I'm not sure about that.
