Two issues here:

(1) My iPhone paired with my car (BMW) and uploaded the address book just fine (and very quickly). However, whenever a call comes in, the iPhone asks me how I want to answer it: on the phone or on the car. This negates the whole hands-free aspect of the Bluetooth connection. Anyone have this problem and/or know how to set it to go to the car automatically when paired? Is the the same with the headset?

(2) When Bluetooth is activated, it's always discoverable. I don't like that. Previous phones have had the option to have the Bluetooth on, but invisible to all but paired devices. Can I turn it on and have it "invisible"?

Thanks in advance.

I have an '06 330i. I also noticed that my phone would ask me how I wanted to connect.

And one other thing, when using the BMW voice commands "dial name"....it will ask me for the name...but after that no matter what I do it won't recognize the name I give. My BMW will just say "say Help to learn voice commands". I thought that the voice dialing was handled on the bmw system and not the phone. I never had this problem with my Razr, which I didn't set up for voice dialing.

hmmm, not sure why you two are experiencing this. my iphone pairs with my '06 X3 with no problems and never asks me what to do with an incoming call...

natalia81 - my X3 may have a different system, but i did have to record names and numbers into the bmw's system itself to use voice dialing (even when i've had phones that had built-in voice dialing). try saying help at the prompt and if one of the commands available is "save name" this may be the way your system works too...

Bluetooth Connectivity

I am able to pair my iPhone with my '06 Audi, but two issues:
1--the pairing is slow
and worse...
2--the pairing drops after just 3 to 4 minutes and it never comes back
The car system worked perfectly with several Treo's, so I decided to try to pair to another device--my iMac and the two could not even be paired. Has anyone an idea on what could be happening? Seems the iPhone bluetooth connection doesn't work.

I just got an answer from Audi after trying the bluetooth connection on two different iPhones and having the connection drop in exactly the same manner.
Audi said it was an incompatibility issue with the Bluetooth firmware in the Audi vs that of the iPhone. They stated there is nothing that can be done on the Audi side and all I can hope for is a firmware update on the iPhone. They have seen this resolve issues with Blackberry's and Palm's before.
Trying to find what version of firmware the iPhone uses so I can see if it is ahead or behind the '06 Audi. (Would guess ahead--which could be a real problem).

Manager for an Audi dealer here. My iPhone does the same thing, although sometimes even if the phone is disconnected, it will still ask me if I want to use the car or the phone.

This is not isolated to the iPhone. There is some update with BT that is killing the connection of most smartphones after a few minutes. A8 customer with the Curve is having the same problem, and my Pearl did it before that.

The Cingular branded 8825 would disconnect as well as a newer Treo. Its a huge customer service issue for us. We know BT works in the car because server sales people have Razrs and it works just as it should.

I don't have this problem on an '07 Infiniti G35 sedan. My problem is the phone doesn't send the address book to the car.

Thanks. I called iPhone tech support and they said in this initial 1.0 roll-out, BT only supports headsets. That it will expand in subsequent software updates.
BTW--after I spoke with my Audi dealership, they had received three more calls on the iPhone compatibility.

yes I have done it. Doesn't have much practical use though because the Bluetooth tested widget doesn't work

Postscript: the Bluetooth Audi connection problem was fixed with the iPhone 1.0.1 update. Assume this will also solve most iPhone/car connectivity issues.
If you still have them, be sure to click the "check for update" button on the iTunes/iPhone summary page.

I was in my 2006 A4 tonight and noticed that it didn't disconnect as it usually does. Hope this update DID do the trick!

Now my only problem is figuring out how to keep my kids quiet while on a call! Might need to revert back to using a damn headset! ;)

I have an '06 (A6) and I've found that if I keep the phone plugged in to a car charger, the BT connection does NOT drop. YMMV but I've tested this a few times now. Plugged in, will not drop (max drive time during the test was 2 hours). Unplugged, it drops the connection within 5 minutes.

I've heard that the security patch may have fixed the BT problem for 'some' but I haven't tested it yet - only did the update last night.

My guess - and it's only a guess - is that, the iPhone remains 'discoverable' as long as you have that BT setting screen active. Once you change screens, it's not discoverable.

If you have another BT phone or a BT computer, you could easily test this theory by trying to 'find' the iPhone.

From what I've read, it sounds like currently the iPhone won't pair with a Mac (MB, MBP, iMac, etc). And if it did, you can't sync via BT.

I could be wrong, been wrong before ;)

My iPhone won't connect with my 2006 BMW x3

Does anyone know how I can get my iPhone to connect to my bluetooth? I have had no other problems before with connecting phones via bluetooth to my car. However, the iPhone does not work. Any ideas or things I should know about?
