I don't know if this is random or if this is something that I should worry about.

I think that the bluetooth function on my rMBP assigns "numbers" to my computer name.

For example:

My computer name would be "rMBP" and sometimes when I'm trying to pair devices via bluetooth it was say that "rMBP (2)" is now discoverable". Then I access the name of my computer through the system preferences and it has changed my name from rMBP to rMBP (2). I've seen this happen all the way up (5). When I see this I change the name back to the original rMBP.

Why does this happen? Is this something that I should be worried about?

Another reason why I ask is because I think that this is effecting the handoff feature on my computer.

solution:

This is caused by your computer seeing a ghost of itself on your network. You can make it stop by turning off Wake for Network Access in the Energy Saver pref pane. Once off, rename your machine to finish.
