This problem seems to have shown up in earlier versions, but I first saw it in Sonoma. I have a B&O Beolit 15 Bluetooth speaker (about six or seven years old). Under all earlier versions of macOS, it correctly showed up as a speaker in the sound icon on the menu bar. Under Sonoma, it shows up as headphones, and doesn't show the volume on the menubar icon in the way that speakers do. The Bluetooth menu shows it correctly as a speaker; only the sound icon shows it as headphones. When I boot into Ventura on the same M2 MBA, it shows correctly as a speaker.

My guess is that the unit is too old for Sonoma to figure out what it is, but that's just a guess. I've been trying to fix it by comparing strings in the plists in /Library/Preferences/Audio, but nothing seems to offer a solution.

As far as I can tell from searching this, no one has come up with a solution. Is there one?

In Settings > Bluetooth, click the little "i" icon next to your bluetooth device. What is the "device type" displayed?

In Settings->Bluetooth, the device type is correctly listed as speaker and the Bluetooth menubar icon (as I said) correctly displays a speaker icon. It's the Sound icon that gets it wrong.

The Audio MIDI Setup app doesn't seem to have any setting that shows or sets the device type. A real puzzle. People have been posting similar problems on Reddit in the past few years, again without a solution.

Hey, did your issue resolve after the latest updates?

I am experiencing exactly the same problem after upgrading to Sonoma. I have Logitech Z537 Bluetooth speakers which are correctly identified as "Speaker" in the Bluetooth menu (incl. the icon). However, they are displayed as headphones in the menu bar. Very annoying.
