bluetooth tether not working properly

whenever I try to connect my iPhone 3G to my MBP I get the attached error message, I've tried re pairing multiple times but I get nothing

I dont particularly need tethering, I just want to try it out and have it ready for whenever I do want to use it

I've noticed this too since SL and 3.1
