I'm using a 2014 mini (OSX 10.10.1) and whenever I try to connect to my iPhone running iOS 8.1.2, it gives me "Network is unavailable"
Any ideas why?

What are you trying to do with the connection? Personal Hotspot?

Continuity\Handoff doesn't work that way! You do need BT enabled and to be on the same WiFi network, but you don't need to actually make a BT connection. There are a few threads in the Yosemite Forum explaining requirements and then there's Apple Support >Here< with the official route. Have a read. ;)
