Please help me before i destroy my computer...

We have just had a telewest blueyonder connection run into the house. We have a pc up and running on it which works fine, no problem.

I have a G5 that i want to connect as well but I cant get it to work at all! I have it connected directly to the supplied motorola surfboard modem and have it set up in network settings to connect using DHCP as told to by telewest. On the front screen of the network settins there is a note next to the 'built in ethernet' button that says 'Ethernet is currently active. Ethernet has a self assigned IP adress and may not be able to connect to the internet'

I can see it connecting and finding its address, but when I open a browser it cannot find any page. I spent 30 min on the phone to telewest only to be told that they dont have any apple macs there so they cant help, and that i should contact someone who knows about macs.

I have also tried connecting using PPPoE but when i try to connect the computer says it cannot find a PPP server. I was told that I didn't need to use PPPoE tho.

It seems stupid cos it should just work automatically straight away.

Would appreciate any help at all,

thanks for your time

rob

If you click on this link http://192.168.100.1 you should get the motorola surfboard status page. If you cant see anything your network setting are wrong on you mac, you will need to set the macs built in ethernet to "Using DHCP"
When i first had blueyonder you had to tell the modem the mac addresses of each computer you were using, then restart the modem wait a while for it to reconise the new computer. The blueyonder help page says you no longer need to tell the modem mac addresses and you should be able to plug and play.

thank you for your help. i got this message back from telewest today:

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thanks for your email to blueyonder Technical Support.

Under the new system, it is no longer required to add NIC mac addresses
to your account to access the internet with another PC, however* when
the cable modem is moved from one computer to another, it can require up
to 3 hours to 'forget' the learned MAC address of the computer it has
been plugged into.

To ensure that the change of computer is recognised by the cable modem,
please follow the steps below:

1) Release the IP details from the computer the modem is connected to.
2) Power off the cable modem for 2.5 to 3 hours.
3) Plug the cable modem into the computer you are moving to.
4) Power on the cable modem.
5) Power on/reboot the computer it is now plugged into.

This will ensure that the cable modem has had time to 'forget' the MAC
address of the first computer.

We hope this resolves your issue.

Kind regards

will try all of your suggestions, thank you again
