blurry menus - Yosemites war on non retina -

It seems that many are suffering from blurry text in menus or fuzzy icons.

LCD smoothing doesn't seem to have a huge impact nor transparency settings. Is it types of connection? Who knows.

This is particularly apparent when connected to an external non retina screen.

Is this a hatred of non retina screens? Has anyone found a work around or is this a bug that needs fixing.

Many photographers and editors have high quality non retina screens but having blurry menus in Yosemite is crazy? Many won't upgrade to retina or 4k screens until Panels move from TN to iPS.

So let the debate on blurry fonts and menus begin! Solutions team macrumours?

Turn off the LCD smoothing and RESTART YOUR COMPUTER.

really? here it's the opposite. i turned LCD smoothing ON and rebooted...and menus look better...

EDIT: my GF & i agree, the fonts look much more solid, and clearer, with LCD smoothing on. but a friend (who lives far away...) says it looks better for him (same basic 13" macbook pro, pre-retina) with it off...

???? whatever works, i guess...

Try using Dark Mode (System Prefs -> General -> "Use dark menu bar and Dock"). It doesn't change the font rendering, but I find the white text on dark background increases readability.

I think Yosemite was just designed for Retina screens in mind, as I'm sure they eventually plan to make their whole lineup Retina. That notwithstanding, Helvetica Neue was an incredibly lazy choice for the global system font. I can't stand its cold, uninspiring quality, it has legibility problems at small point sizes, and its overuse in design leads to Yosemite UI's feeling like any company could have created it.

Ah fair enough. This is on a 27" NEC MultiSync PA272W.

I'm going blind trying to see what is written in the Safari tabs: favs & tabs texts are so small that its annoying to use an external monitor. It's like they made "grey" font instead of black, with the thinest pitch font possible, so over the grey background of the Safari and System menus it's all damn hard to read.

The only thing that helped is turning on the contrast option in Accessibility (over the "Reduce transparency") but it looks all like hell, like an old OS, so Yosemite looses its sense of "smart and flat OS".

If they made Yosemite to be used in retina's screens, what happens with the external monitors? Let's buy 4K ones, no? Come on Apple...

turning off LCD font smoothing has made an improvement on my iMac (non-retina of course). thanks for the tip.
also, restart required.
