Ok I was all excited about getting my new BMW because I saw on the website that you can dock your iphone to the new ones. When I ordered the car, I wasn't planning on getting the iphone. After I got the phone, I just assumed the car would have the usb and aux input. Well it must be an option because all I have is the AUX port behind the console. The place where the usb/aux connector goes is blank so my car must not have the option. I wonder if that's something I could buy and install. I don't know if it would be a simple connection what with the Idrive stuff and all. It's an '08 535i if you're wondering. Has anyone installed a usb connector in their car?

Yeah it has an AUX connector but I want the one that charges and I can control the IPOD function through the IDRIVE.
"docking" the iphone to any new bmw is definitely not mentioned in their announcement - what works "out of the box" is the bluetooth compatibility if you have the BMW assist option. the usb connection is definitely an option that must be specified in the order, but your dealership may be able to install it for you. you may also want to consider a DICE kit to listen to the music and control playback on your iphone in your 535 - i've seen this company advertise them in some bmw forums i frequent and i hear really good things about them (the company and the product - i'm not affiliated with either, btw).
i was just thrilled about the bluetooth compatibility - this makes or breaks a new cell phone for me. i have bmw's oem ipod kit in my X3, though i haven't tried my iphone with it since i have a dedicated nano that stays in the car.
if you didn't order the car with it, it's expensive to add-in. the parts cost about $600 (ordered from BMW) and they charge anywhere from $500-1000 to install it. everyone i know recommends not attempting it on your own, especially on a new car. and if you have a CD changer, you can't use the iPod connector since it pretty much takes place of the changer. we have an '07 328xi and didn't think of getting it. when we get our new car in Dec we'll be sure to add in the iPod connectivity kit. you may be able to find a 3rd party dealer somewhere that can get the official part. not sure about installation and what it does to your warranty (especially if it's a lease).
Since I've done this install myself on a handful of cars including retrofitting my M3 I'd have to disagree. Yes for older models bluetooth and ipod retrofit was a pain. But for newer models you have BT and Aux in, and adding a IPOD module from EAS or some other third party is simple if you are capable of using hand tools. This won't void your warranty. Beware the iphone still won't work on some aftermarket systems like the JVC.
I could probably get my hands on a factory plug but I don't know if I would have to load any software to get it to function.
