BNC digital out?

Has anyone gone up line from the optical out to see if it's possable to tap in a 75 ohm BNC or RCA digital out ?
There must be a way to add one.
Why did Apple choose an optical out,haveing to convert the bit stream to light instead of just hardwireing to an RCA or BNC @75ohms?

BTW is Tommy Chong the head of R&D at apple or what?

Are you trying to convert the optical output to digital coax or analog?

If digital, this should do it:
