Books and Software for Learning XHTML?

I was wondering if you guys could recommend some good books for learning XHTML and CSS. I have done several of the basic online html tutorials, and I am trying to find a book that is a little more in-depth. I was looking at the different books on amazon and trying to decide which one would be a good one to try, but a lot of them looked like they were either too basic or else too obsolete. Even those printed less than two years ago looked like they went into old html tags that aren't even supposed to be used anymore. Does anyone know of a good up to date one?

Also, I am wondering if it would be a good idea to get a WYSIWYG program like Dreamweaver. I have been using textedit to write out the web pages. Some people have told me that WYSIWYG programs are the only way to go, and others have told me to stay away from them. What is your opinion of these programs? If you recommend them, then which one do you think is the best?

Do NOT use a WYSIWYG editor. They will cripple you. Don't use TextEdit, either. Get an editor with syntax highlighting, such as Textwrangler, Textmate, or Coda.

Don't bother with XHTML -- it's currently not a very valuable standard.

Learn HTML and CSS and you'll know all you need to.

As far as WYSIWIG -- I find that most art students use WYSIWIG editors, but most real production is done using text editors. Figure out which camp you're in and then do as the romans do...

What basis are using to come to that conclusion?

I say XHTML is the better to learn since knowing it basically lets you do HTML if you really want to.
