i have purchased a MBP and have noticed that the wifi reception is nothing to brag about. i do love my MBP but i was wondering if apple or a 3rd party has anything to offer to boost my reception. i use my MBP in various hotspots and buildings so i am never sure about what hardware i will be using to connect to the internet.

thanks

Ethan

I got the new airport extreme and the range is awesome. Awesome to the max. Then again I have a C2D MBP. Better than any Sony, HP, Dell, or IBM notebook I have used from work.

No, he's talking about the recently introduced 802.11n Airport base station from Apple. Given your question, I don't see the relevance. My C2D MBP does well enough. I travel a lot, and I manage to connect wherever there's an access point.

You've really got no options other than an external antenna. The casing of the MBP hinders its WiFi reception a bit, along with the chipset it uses. The Intel PRO chipset is a lot nicer (the one in "Centrino" laptops).

I"ve experienced the opposite with my MBP - i'm sitting here with FULL signal. In my room, the same room that with my iBook and Sony with External Wireless I got ZERO signal. Maybe 1 bar if I was luck and held the computer
"just right".

The Signal Strength with the Airport Extreme N router is about 2 bars stronger when you open the signal meter do-hicky. But overall, i'm impressed with the reception.

Worth noting, my router is in what used to be the garage in my house, some tight angles with lots of metal studs between me and it. We aren't sure how much metal we have in our walls - but enough that it interfered with the wireless (and cordless phone).

I did see a strength change from about 85-90% to 100% by switching from the Belkin N1 to the Apple last weekend. Overall, i'm pleased with the Apple.

I don't take my computer places - so i can't comment on the connections out and about.
