Boot Camp booting XP from Option key = crash...?

Mac Pro 3 ghz 4-core with 9 gig Crucial ram, 500 gig HDD x 4, ACD 30" x 2, Leopard. X1900 video. Windows on a 50 gig partition on my main "Macintosh HD".

If I boot into Windows by selecting it from holding down the Option key at startup, then video isn't initialized (monitor is FUBAR) and it ultimately crashes to a blue "fatal error" screen (I can't read it). Only thing I can read is that "Windows did not start normally"....(duh).

If I boot into Windows by setting it as the startup disk in System Preferences, no problem - boots into Windows normally.

As far as I can tell, this isn't happening to others. Is it?

did it ever work for you?

If not, then the faq says you have to load the os x disc to add some drivers

My problem is that I don't know how to make the windows partician bootable

comes up and says disc error and the faq say to read the instructions.

can someone just tell me

Well, as it turns out, I've found that Windows also crashes about 75% of the time if I hot-restart, whether I hold the option key or set the startup disk. If I shut down OSX, wait about 20 seconds, then cold-start normally with the option key down and select Windows, Windows boots up just fine. No problem going from Windows and hot-restarting into OSX.

Something about my hardware I guess. If I had to bet, I'd bet on the time it takes Windows XP to flush and memory check my 9 gig of RAM, or maybe it's the video card. I just firmware-updated the ATI X1900, maybe that had something to do with it. I'll have to check.

Other that the intermittent booting problem (apparently now solved-or at least managed), it works fine. If I hold down the option key at bootup, I get to choose either the Windows partition, or the OSX partition. This Mac runs XP faster than any PC I've ever used. FPS video games just fly.

The installation of Windows is pretty straightforward from Leopard/Boot Camp - BUT, you have to make sure you install Windows on the right partition. You have to watch closely when the Windows install screen comes up where you choose the partition. It's easy to just hit return on the default screen.

I feel like I'm reviving a lot of threads lately, but this darn macbook pro has so many problems. you can't say i didn't search!

anyway, i'm having the same problem. did you ever manage to find a solution? windows boots up normally but then crashes upon login. there is no login sound either most of the time. when there is, it cuts out half way. also, sometimes i manage to log in successfully when i click on the trackpad when i log in, but when i do, there is always an error message about winlogon.exe. help!
