Boot Camp gaming temps

Hi,

all of my eight CPU core temps get in the high 80s (Celsius) while the machine is under full load. Does anyone know how hot this thing can run until the heat actually starts to damage it?

I've read the fan speed management under Boot Camp 3.0 isn't as good as under OS X. Is this true? Any 3rd party app out there that would help?

It isn't just not as good, its non-existent. the proper way to do this is run SMC fan control, get it to your desired fan speed (i toss it on max) then RESTART (dont shut down and shut back on) and start in windows.

The core temps now average in the mid 60s under full load, which is surely safer although before they were well within TJMax specs.

I set a minimum fan speed of 1000 RPM, sounds good enough.

General rule of thumb is that getting above 70˚C is not very healthy for your equipment, and 80˚C is the point where the heat begins to slowly (but noticeably) shorten its lifespan, with TJmax being the point where it can safely spike up to without immediately causing damage, but is not sustainable without adversely affecting its lifespan. High 60's is pretty toasty but still safely tolerable.

Or for short: Avoid 70+˚C.

And yeah, that's how I boot into Windows for games; turn up the fans then restart. MBP with nVidia 9600m gets hot very quickly.

Do the same here on my Mac Pro. I also use the (in my case) ATI tool to monitor my GPU temps and may bump the fan up slightly if I see it getting above 70c.

Do you think I should put all the fans on Max setting via SMC fan controller, prior to re-booting into Windows, or is this overkill and not great for the fans? Also, being a bit os a lifelong Mac user, how can you monitor the temperature sensors once you're in the Windows OS?

I am using Real Temp under Windows. You may also try SpeedFan.

Checking your temps, you will know whether you need to use smcFanControl or not

Can I ask, a long time ago people said that these apps the windows temp apps i mean didnt work properly with imac hardware - either the just didnt see the sensors or they reported incorrectly or only partially.

is this no longer i problem? i have a c2d imac. (i use smcfancontrol from the osx side with the reboot trick, and just check the temps when i come back home to osx after windowsing)

some people have reported that lubbo fan control works ok in Windows to see temps and adjust fan speeds....

I myself have never gotten it to work.
