Boot Camp Partitioning

alright I honestly don't know what to do, I bought a second hd strictly for windows and to have more space so I wouldn't be touching the os x system disk. So I run boot camp assistant partition my drive, but then I was reading the guide in which it says it will ask you if you want to make a disk for windows drivers in which I was never asked, so for one thing that confused me. Second I throw in my xp disc and when I get to choosing what partition to install it on, it says However, this disk does not contain a windows xp compatible partition, to continue installing windows xp return to partition selection screen and create a windows xp compatible partition. So I am somewhat confused and lost.

do u mean a external HD?.....windows will not boot from a external only from internal partition so that is all bootcamp lets u do....i think

no, it is an internal hd, I know you cant install windows from an external just to clarify.

format the drive in windows, as if you dont have OSX.

i did this last night after messing around with disk utiltity in OSX. I gave up and just patitioned it in windows as NTFS. Go to Adminstration Tools in the control panel, Computer Management, and Disk Management.

I dont think you want to install bootcamp/XP on the second drive if you are just looking for more space.

"Make driver disk" was only needed for Bootcamp Beta.

Leopard install disk comes with bootcamp drivers. After you install windows, drop in your Leopard disk to install the drivers.

Also, I know intel Macs can boot from both internal or external drives, at least with OS X and Linux (on cd, on thumbdrive).

alright well I did this and now I need some guidance, I used the boot camp assistant to remove my partition and make it one drive again and then decided to partition it using disk utility so now when I tried to install windows using that partition it asked me to partition to either fat or ntfs with four options format to fat32 quick, format fat32, format ntfs quick, format ntfs and convert to ntfs. I had read somewhere that it said os x cant support a fat32 drive above 32gb I believe?

I believe that is true. I formatted a 40g partition NTFS for my XP. Works like a charm.

so what option should I use, and what is the advantage of having a ntfs partition that is compatible with os x?

EDIT: Problem still not fixed I just tried choosing the windows partition I had created and now its back to saying this disk does not contain a windows xp-compatible partition.

I really need to get this resolved and get windows running I have wasted I dont know how many hours trying to get this damn thing to work.

yep same problem here.

Just switched over and dont know how to load my Windows XP then my Windows upgrade to Vista disks.

I don't know what options to choose and i am jsut begining boot camp.
Is it a FAT or other format/partition chooses. Please help i am on hour 2.

Just insert your XP disk, restart the machine holding down the C key and it will boot to the disk (you don't need to run Boot Camp). In the set up screen (after it finishes loading the files) it will ask you if you want to do an upgrade or a clean install. Select clean install and the select your second drive. Then select format and let it format the drive for you. It will then install. I followed this procedure to install XP Pro on my second drive and it worked like a charm.
The disk will be formatted with NTFS which is the Windows file system and it's not fully compatible with OSX. I believe that you can read files in OSX but cannot write to a NTFS partition.

Hi, I had the same probelm installing vista through boot camp. I gave 15 G for vista to format, I did so it formatted in fat, and would not let me install. I may have missed this but I don't recall in boot camp asking to format in fat or ntfs. I have both a mac pro and macbook pro with leporad on both.
Any help would be appriciated.

alright well now I got vista installed but I have a problem, I can eject my discs but can not close the tray.

edit: I fixed the disc tray problem I have to close them through command prompt, but I just noticed that I have no sound at all in vista although the audio mixer level appears to work.

edit: I have now fixed the sound problem, just had to install realtek hd driver

Maybe I missed this, but did you put in the Leopard DVD and install the drivers from it?

no, I did not
I put the disk in but when it did autorun, nothing showed up for installing boot camp drivers.
