Boot Camp Tips

HI all

I will be getting my iMac in a couple of weeks and i will immediatly be installing Vmware Fusion Beta and Boot camp on the new system. I want to do this before i save any data in case something goes wrong with the windows process.

I am a little bit nervous installing windows via boot camp as i have heared about people overwriting MAc osx in the process. I have already downloaded the instructions of Apple's website and I was wondering if you guys coul give me some advice before I take the plunge. ANy help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance

The only advice I have for you is to not overwrite your OS X partition. Follow the instructions carefully, and this shouldn't be a problem.

I found a good way to double check is to look at the partition you're going to install to, and make sure it's the size you set in the BootCamp utility.

The chances of overwriting OS X are pretty slim, but to be careful, install boot camp and Windows before you put any information on the machine. That way, if anything goes wrong, then you can just re-install X from the restore disks.

Also, why are you installing both VMware (the final version came out not to long ago) and boot camp?

Download winclone and use it to create images of your windows partition. Use it immediately after installing windows but before installing the apple drivers. Then use it again after installing the drivers and once more after you have installed your windows programs and adjusted your settings to your liking. I call my three images: windowsonly, basicdrivers, and complete. It is nice having these images when you need to troubleshoot problems and there are still little bugs in boot camp especially with third party drivers. Much better than doing an uninstall which is usually not thorough anyways.

WEll i see a need to use both of them. IF i ever need to use high end apps i will most likely need boot camp and if i don't i think using Fusion will be best. I don't think i will purchase Fusion, instead i might just use the beta .
