Boot Camp/VM from external ssd

Hi!
I'm currently in the situation where I don't have enough space on my MBP 256 GB mid-2014.

So before going out and invest in a brand new Mac, I was wondering if any of you have any experience with running Boot camp or a win 10 virtual machine from an external SSD?

How is the performance compared to internal installation?
