Boot Camp - Windows XP with old disc

I want to install Windows XP on a Mac Pro using Boot Camp. However, the Windows XP install disc is old--from 2002. It does have Service Pack 1 on it.

Two questions:

1. If I install from this disc, will Windows Update still give me the option to download Service Pack 2 & 3? I'm a little confused because I thought I heard somewhere that Microsoft no longer supports Service Pack 1--does that mean I can't update it or just that they won't offer technical support, etc? I know for sure I read you can't install SP3 without either SP1a or SP2 already installed. My install disc doesn't have SP1a.

2. Even if I can update it through Windows Update, I would rather not go through that process. I have read about slipstreaming and that sounds like a good way to go. The process to make one seems to require a Windows XP computer though and I only have access to a computer with Windows Vista at my employer (the old PC with XP at my house is so slow it would never work). I tried to use the program AutoStreamer but I couldn't get it to run on the Vista PC.

Any help you can offer would be great!

sorry, but you cannot install XP using SP1, it MUST be SP2 - there is no way around it.

you can use a process called "slipstreaming" to merge SP2 with your original SP1 disc, this involves downloading SP2, downloading a program, and using the program to combine the two and finally burn them to another disc. then you will be able to install using the new burnt disc.



once you install it onto your computer, you will be able to perform any update you see fit - it is exactly like a normal PC.

I mentioned the slipstreaming in item 2 of my original post and I agree that is the best way to go. But how can I make a Windows XP slipstream using Windows Vista? Like I said, I cannot use my original XP computer to make it. The program you can download to do it, Autostreamer, would not open in Windows Vista.

And the reason way I'm not installing Windows Vista on the Boot Camp partition is the Vista computer I'm referring to is my employer's computer and I don't have a personal copy of Vista.

have you tried searching for other slip stream programs? this is pretty much the only way...
